Note:	Karl Bodmer: An important painter, etcher, lithographer and explorer, Karl Bodmer was one of the first artists to bring the forest and wilderness to the artistic forefront. A student of Jakob Meyer in Switzerland and of Cornu in Paris, Bodmer was already employed at the age of twenty-two, engraving German views. On the following year (1832) Karl Bodmer was engaged by the Prussian Prince Maximilian as an artist for an important exploratory expedition to the American West. For two years Karl Bodmer drew and painted the hitherto unknown tribes of North Dakota and Montana. He lived and worked among the Blackfeet, Mandan, Cree and Assiniboin Tribes, creating (along with George Catlin) a vital artistic record of Native life before it was forever changed by westward expansion. Karl Bodmer returned to Europe in 1834 and during the following years frequently exhibited his art in Paris, Marseille, Vienna and elsewhere.
	1849 marks another significant year in Karl Bodmer's life. At this time he settled in the French forest of Barbizon. This was the beginnings of the renowned Barbizon school of art, the first group of painters and etchers devoted almost exclusively to landscape art and the true precursors of the Impressionists. While there, Karl Bodmer befriended and worked with such great artists as Millet and Rousseau. It was also in Barbizon that Karl Bodmer created such famous series of natural history subjects such as, Chapitres sur les Animaux and Animaux et Paysages d'apres Nature (1858). This original lithograph entitled, Sangliers dans une Mare (Wild Boars in a Pond) hails from this latter set.
	The lithographs Karl Bodmer created for Animaux et Paysages d'apres Nature were far ahead of their time. Firstly he created artistically superb, large lithographs employing complex multiple printings with tint stones. Secondly, he was one of the first artists to depict his animals within their natural habitats. These are truly remarkable landscape and animal views and such work secured for Karl Bodmer the prestigious French Legion of Honour in 1876. Karl Bodmer's original lithographs, aquatints and etchings are found in the permanent collections of many major museums throughout the world, including the British Museum, London.
	Sangliers dans une Mare was the fifth lithograph published for Animaux et Paysages d'apres Nature. It is both a fine animal study and a beautiful depiction of the trees and fields of the Barbizon area.
	Bertauts, Publishing & Printing Firm (c. 1830's - c. 1970's): The renowned French lithographic publisher and printer, Bertauts was considered one of the finest printers in Europe during the mid-nineteenth century. According to the Beaus-Arts – de la Lithographie et des Imprimeurs, Bertauts began printing lithographs after 1826 and established his lithographic firm in 1836. During the 1830's and into the 1870's, original lithographs printed by Bertauts appeared in such publications as, "L'Artiste, Paris" (1831-1904), "Album du Salon" (1839-1844), "Les Beaux-Arts" (1843-1844), "Les Artistes Contemporains", (1845 - 1853), "Les Artistes Anciens et Modernes, Paris" (1850 - 1862), "Animaux et Paysages d'Apres Nature" (1858), the "Gazette des beaux arts" (1859-1939), "Souvenirs d' Artistes" (1860-1876), and other major 19th century art journals of the time. Sangliers dans une Mare (Wild Boars in a Pond) was printed by Bertauts for "Animaux et Paysages d'Apres Nature" published by Goupil & Cie., Paris in 1858.

Condition:	Printed upon thick wove paper and with large, full margins as published in Paris in one edition only in 1858 by Goupil & Cie., and bearing the company's official blindstamp. Containing very faint traces of foxing in the outer margins, else a superbly printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. Sangliers dans une Mare represents a prime, original example of the famous art of Karl Bodmer.
