Heureux ceux qui sont morts (Fortunate are Those Whom are Dead)

Edmond Bille's original lithograph entitled, Heureux ceux qui sont morts (Fortunate are Those Whom are Dead) was created for a set of twenty lithographs which was published in 1917 under the title of Une Danse Macabre (A Macabre Dance). The connecting theme for the set was the ongoing horrors of the First World War. This original impression is printed upon wove paper and with full margins as published by Editions Spes in Lausanne. Heureux ceux qui sont morts is titled in the stone to the lower left and signed with Edmond Bille's 'EB' monogram to the lower right. This is a riveting, original example of the art created by this Swiss artist.

Note: Edmond Bille: An important twentieth century Swiss painter, engraver, lithographer, stained glass designer, author, journalist and politician, Edmond Bille studied art techniques in Paris under both Jean-Paul Laurens and Benjamin Constant. He then completed his education at the Ecole d'art de Geneve (Geneva) from 1894 to 1895. Bille's art first gained international recognition when he exhibited at the Universal Exposition of 1900. During the following years his paintings and original prints were regularly included in major exhibitions in France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Today Bille's fine art is included in museums in Lausanne, Neuchatel, Bale, Soleure and elsewhere.
  As an original printmaker Edmond Bille created both individual works of art and prints in the form of a series or set. Heureux ceux qui sont morts (Fortunate are Those Whom are Dead) was created for a set of twenty original lithographs which was published in 1917 under the title of Une Danse Macabre (A Macabre Dance). The connecting theme for each of these lithographs was the ongoing horrors of the First World War. This original lithograph poignantly captures the devastation of a World War One battlefield.
