Edmond Bille: An important twentieth century Swiss painter, engraver,
lithographer, stained glass designer, author, journalist and politician,
Edmond Bille studied art techniques in Paris under both Jean-Paul Laurens
and Benjamin Constant. He then completed his education at the Ecole d'art
de Geneve (Geneva) from 1894 to 1895. Bille's art first gained international
recognition when he exhibited at the Universal Exposition of 1900. During
the following years his paintings and original prints were regularly included
in major exhibitions in France, Switzerland, Italy and Germany. Today Bille's
fine art is included in museums in Lausanne, Neuchatel, Bale, Soleure and
elsewhere. |
|
As an original printmaker Edmond Bille created both individual
works of art and prints in the form of a series or set. Heureux ceux qui sont morts
(Fortunate are Those Whom are Dead) was created for a set of twenty original lithographs which
was published in 1917 under the title of Une Danse Macabre (A Macabre Dance). The connecting
theme for each of these lithographs was the ongoing horrors of the First World War.
This original lithograph poignantly captures the devastation of a World War One battlefield. |
