Francois Bignon & Zacharie Heince

Francois Bignon and Zacharie Heince - Anne de Montmorency Count de Beaumont and First Duke of Montmorency

Anne de Montmorency, Count de Beaumont and First Duke of Montmorency

Francois Bignon's original portrait engraving of Anne de Montmorency, Count de Beaumont and First Duke of Montmorency entitled, Annas de Montmorency comes stabuli was published in Paris in 1650. It originates from a set of twenty-seven, large portraits entitled, Les Portraits des homes illustres Francois qui sont peints dans la galerie du Palais Cardinal de Richelieu (The Portraits of Illustrious Frenchmen in the Gallery of Cardinal Richelieu). Each of these portraits was designed by Zacharie Heince and engraved by Francois Bignon. Also these two artists published the completed set.

This impressive seventeenth century portrait engraving contains a number of vignettes along the outer border, most dealing with the Duke of Montmorency's military victories. It is printed upon seventeenth century hand-made, laid paper as published in Paris in 1650.

Title: Annas de Montmorency comes stabuli (Anne de Montmorency, Count de Beaumont and First Duke of Montmorency)
Artist: Heince, Zacharie (Paris, 1611 - 1669)
Engraver: Bignon, Francois (Paris, Born Circa 1620)
Date: 1650
Medium: Original Engraving
Note: Francois Bignon: A seventeenth century French engraver, Francois Bignon is known almost exclusively for his work in portraiture. His two great sets in this area are, Thirty-Three Portraits of the Plenipotentiaries assembled at the Peace of Munster (1648) and The Portraits of Illustrious Frenchmen in the Gallery of Cardinal Richelieu (1650). For both sets Bignon worked in conjunction with the French designer and artist, Zacharie Heince.
Around 1645, Francois Bignon was awarded the title of 'graveur ordinaire du Roi'. None of his engraved art is dated later than 1650 and thus it is possible that he died at an early age.
Zacharie Heince: A 17th century painter and draughtsman, Zacharie Heince was known both for his portraits and religious art. In 1664 and 1665 he was commissioned by the Goldsmiths Corporation of Paris to paint religious scenes for the cathedral of Notre-Dame. In 1663 Zacharie Heince became an Academician of the Academie Royale.
A Biographical Note: Anne, Duke of Montmorency (Chantilly, 1493 - Paris, 1567) was a major military commander in the first half of the sixteenth century. His first battles were at Ravenna (1512), Marignano (1515), and at the defence of Mezieres (1521). In 1522 he raised an army in Switzerland and advanced into Italy where he captured both Novara and Vigevano. Later that year Anne was made a Marshal of France by King Francis I.
In 1526 Anne helped to arrange the Treaty of Madrid. He then was appointed Grand Master of France and Governor of Languedoc. As the King's Chief Minister he was active in the negotiations for the Peace of CambraI (1529). During the latter 1530's Anne fell out of favour with the court and retired from service in 1541. At the accession of King Henry II (1547), however, he was recalled to court and, in the following year, he mercilessly crushed a revolt in Bordeaux. For his actions he was made First Duke of Montmorency and Peer of France.
During the following years the Duke of Montmorency led campaigns against both the Spanish and English armies. At the battle of Saint-Denis he was wounded and died several days later.
Anne, Duke of Montmorency, was regarded as a courageous and energetic commander. He was also reviled for his cruelty in battle to his foes and for his extreme, religious intolerance.
