Note: |
George Biddle: Belonging to one of Philadelphia's
most affluent families, George Biddle initially followed in his father's
and grandfather's footsteps, receiving his law degree from Harvard University
in 1911. He then (to the dismay of his relations) announced that he was
determined to become a painter. For the following four years George Biddle
studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Philadelphia, the Julian
Academy, Paris and under Ole Nordmark at the Munich Academy in Germany.
Shortly thereafter the United States entered World War One and Biddle served
two years in the infantry. |
|
When the War ended (1918), George Biddle again returned to
study in Paris. He began, however, to tire of critical and stylistic teaching
methods and abruptly moved to a remote Polynesian village where he lived
and worked for the following two years. The experience shaped Biddle's art
for the remainder of his career. |
|
When George Biddle returned to the United States in the early
1920's he quickly became one of America's finest artists. Now critical of
European artistic abstraction he was at the vanguard of the growing movement
toward realism in American art. Major government commissions for his sculpture
and mural paintings followed -- including his famous murals for the Department
of Justice Building in Washington, DC As well, in the 1930's, George Biddle
worked closely with President Roosevelt to institute the highly successful
Federal Arts Project which aided American artists during the years of the
Depression. |
|
George Biddle was Vice-president of the American Society of
Painters, Sculptors and Gravers and President of the American Society of
Mural Painters. His paintings, drawings and lithographs are included in
many major, international galleries such as, the Metropolitan and Whitney
Museums, New York, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Museum of Fine Arts,
Boston, the Palace of the Legion of Honor, San Francisco, Kaiser Friedrich's
Museum, Berlin, and the Galeria d'Arte Moderna, Venice, Italy. |
|
Treetops depicts a Polynesian village. This fine
drawing displays Biddle's lifelong concern with design concepts by its brilliant
use of space and by sure placed forms which suggest rather than delineate.
Only an accomplished hand could create such a full and rich composition
with so few lines. |
