Andre Bicat: A twentieth century
British painter, printmaker, designer and teacher, Andre Bicat began his
career as a set designer for the theatre. He began designing for Mercury
Theatre Productions, London, as early as 1932 and among his greatest accomplishments
in this field was the 1938 set designs for T. S. Eliot's, Murder
in the Cathedral, which took place in New York. After the end of the Second
World War (1945), Andre Bicat exhibited his art extensively, both in Britain
and France. He was a regular exhibitor at the Salon de la Jeune, Paris,
and at the Leicester Galleries, London (1949-1970). |
|
From 1947 to 1985 Andre Bicat lived and worked at Crays Pond,
near Reading, and then moved to London. He was also a well respected teacher
and served as an art tutor at the Royal College of Art from 1966 to 1974.
Today the prints and paintings of Andre Bicat are included in such major
public collections as the British Arts Council, the Victoria and Albert
Museum and the British Museum, London. |
