Albert Besnard: As famous for his original
etchings and drypoints as for his paintings, Albert Besnard holds a prime
position in late nineteenth and early twentieth century French art. A student
of Cabanel, his initial paintings were composed in an Academic style. Albert Besnard's
first original etching was created in 1873 and in total he etched and engraved
over two hundred works of art. He received some instruction in etching
from Alphonse Legros but of more importance was the advice and encouragement
he received from his close friend, Anders Zorn (1860-1920), the famous
Swedish etcher. Albert Besnard's artistic success dates from 1874, when he was
awarded the Prix de Rome. The honours that followed after that date are
far too numerous to include. |
|
As an important etcher, Albert Besnard has long been praised for his ability
to depict light and shade and for his subtle use of patterns and rhythms.
Yet the recognition of these elements barely scratches the surface of his
art. Scholars -- often eager to place an individual's art within a category
-- have always had difficulty with Albert Besnard. Some have examined his handling
of light and classed him as an Impressionist. Others have looked more carefully
at the emotional content of his art and hailed him as a Symbolist. Like
other great and influential artists, however, Besnard won't be classified.
The emotional and mystical elements within his work are the key to his
art and are completely his own. Brilliant etchings and drypoints are a
unique search for the timeless relationship between feeling and form. |

Au Bord du Gange a Benares was commissioned by the fine arts journal,
L'Art et les Artistes, in 1912. Besides this publisher, such major French
arts journals as Gazette des Beaux Arts and L'Art commissioned Albert Besnard
for original etchings during his career. This brilliant etching, was not published in any other edition. |
