Title: | Sa Tres Gracieuse Majeste La Reine Wilhelmine (Her Most Gracious Majesty, Queen Wilhelmine) |
Artist: | Berthon, Paul Emile 'Paul Berthon' (Chartrettes, 1872 - Paris, 1909) |
Date: | 1901 |
Medium: | Original Art Nouveau Colour Lithograph |
Note: | Paul Emile Berthon 'Paul Berthon': Along with the art of Alfons Mucha, the lithographs of Paul Emile Berthon stand at the centre of our interpretation of Art Nouveau grace and beauty. Despite his very short life it is impossible not to rank Paul Berthon among the greatest masters of this entire turn-of-the-century movement. |
Paul Berthon first studied as a painter in Villefranche before coming to Paris in 1893. There he enrolled at the Ecole Normale d'Enseignement de Dessin, receiving lessons from Luc-Oliver Merson. Yet the greatest influence upon Berthon came from his teacher of Decorative Arts, Eugene Grasset (1841-1917). Grasset's impact upon the early formation of the Art Nouveau movement had been vast and both Paul Berthon and Mucha acknowledged him as the single greatest influence upon their art. Paul Berthon's early lithographs (dated up to 1896) often show stylistic elements comparable to Grasset. As his style developed, however, Paul Berthon began using the autumnal pastel coloured palette and the strongly defined lines and patterns that have made his art so famous. Other key elements in Berthon's art were his study of Japanese woodcuts and his attention to the art of the natural world -- particularly its flora and fauna -- where he utilized the arts of medieval France as exemplars.
The graphic oeuvre of Paul Berthon consists of ninety-four original lithographs. Sa Tres Gracieuse Majeste La Reine Wilhelmine dates from 1901. During this period Berthon also created portraits of England’s Edward VII, Germany’s Emperor Wilhelm, Franz-Joseph of Austria and Sarah Bernhardt. But it was this beautiful portrait of Holland’s Queen Wi9lhelmina which provided Berthon with hisw greates inspiration and experimentalization. No less than three full versions of this original lithograph exist.
In the first versions the background buildings were more sharply defined, the clouds were rounded, the lacework upon both the cap and dress were white, while the cap’s dentelle with the letter ‘W’ was a strong yellow. The overall composition was dominated by rus tones.
Berthon was not unhappy with his initial versions but he felt that by altering various colours and patterns further developments could be explored, somewhat like a composer creating variations upon the same theme. Thus in this final version the rust tones have given way to various shades of deepened greens, the dentelle and bordering for the dress have become a burnished gold, while rich rose tones have been introduced to both the dress and the cap. As well, the lace work patterns within the cap have been significantly altered as have the clouds which now appear a broad horizontal bands.
In every aspect, Sa tres Gracieuse Majeste La Reine Wilhelmine is a brilliant work of art. It is no wonder that Paul Berthon is ranked among France’s finest artists of the Art Nouveau era.

Condition: | Printed upon thin wove paper as published in Paris in the limited edition of 200 in 1901. Margins cropped to the image and backed on board, as usual. Signed in the stone (upper left corner) by the artist. Containing one slight marginal tear along the lower right edges extending into the lace work of the dress, else a superb colour printing with full burnished gold. One should take note that most Art Nouveau lithographs have experienced extensive damage over the years, particularly in the paper becoming stained and brittle and the colours fading. This original example is thus in very good condition with vibrantly printed colours -- even the gold burnishing still maintains its gleam! Altogether, this is a major example of the art of Paul Berthon and of the famous Art Nouveau era. |
