Roloff Beny: One of Canada's better modern artists and certainly
its most famous photographer, Roloff Beny graduated from Trinity College,
Toronto, after concentrating upon art, archeology and classical studies.
He then received a scholarship (1945) to study lithography and etching
at Iowa State University, under Mauricio Lansansky. Roloff Beny first distinguished
himself in the fields of painting and original printmaking. In this latter
category he created two outstanding sets; the etchings for Village
of Souls (1948) and the lithographs for An Aegean Notebook (1950). Nostalgia
in Nauplia hails from last named set. Altogether An Aegean Notebook comprised
twenty original Roloff Beny lithographs dealing with scenes in Greece
and the island of Crete. Nauplia is situated in the Peloponesus, an area
that intrigued Roloff Beny both artistically and from the standpoint of its
ancient architecture and archeology. |
|
In 1950, a bout with rheumatic fever brought Roloff Beny home from
Venice to his parents in Lethbridge, Alberta. He used that time to create
many of the lithographs found in An Aegean Notebook. The entire set was
published later that year in Canada. Each lithograph was limited to fifty
signed impressions. |
|
It is interesting to compare this fine work of art with
Roloff Beny's first collection of photographs published in 1958 under
the title of Thrones of Heaven. These photographs, along with Times
of the Gods (1962), deal with the Mediterranean and with ancient Greece,
in particular. Thus Roloff Beny managed to convey the spirit of this area in
different mediums. |
|
In 1967 Roloff Beny received the Order of Canada. Today
his original prints are found in such collections as the National Gallery
of Canada, Ottawa, Brooklyn Museum, Harvard University, Yale University
and the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. |
