Note: | John T. Bentley 'J. T. Bentley': A late nineteenth century architectural etcher, John T. Bentley worked in both America and Europe. Many of his original etchings are views of famous cathedrals, both interior and exterior scenes. Besides completing this large etching entitled, Wedding Bells in Old Trinity (Wall Street and Broadway, Trinity Church Altar, New York), which depicts an interior church scene with a wedding procession in progress, J. T. Bentley also created other important architectural etchings. The Art Institute of Chicago published a book that contained a number of etchings from their recent New York Exhibition, March 30, 1885 entitled, The Art Institute, Special Exhibition of Works of the New York Etching Club and other Etchings. Page six of this catalogue lists two works by John Bentley #82 & #83 entitled, St. Ouen, Rouen, France after Thomas Colman Dibdin (1810-1893), and Rounding the Buoy after Otis Weber (American, late 19th century). Also, there is a quote describing the artist in one of Christian Klackner's books published in New York in 1884, it reads; “John T. Bently, whose architectural plates are justly regarded as the most picturesque and masterly etchings”. This book also mentions another of Bentley's etchings, Duck Shooting. Further reference is included with the documentation. The Library of Congress, Washington, D.C. lists an impression of John T. Bentley's original etching entitled, Wedding Bells in Old Trinity in its permanent collection, No. 2003680504. |
Information that provides clues to Bentley’s place of birth and residence in Tenafly, New Jersey may be found at the United States Patent office (1889) and (1918) and the Canadian Journal of Science, Literature and History), Toronto, (1883-1884. The first source of information comes from the United States Patent office, patent serial No. 632,437, Sept., 5 1899 by J. T. Bentley. It reads; “Be it known that I, John T Bentley, a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, residing in Englewood, in the county of Bergen and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Means for and Art of Making Printing Surfaces of which the following is a specification...”. The next bit of information is another patent, also at the United States Patent office, serial No. 235,902, patented May 21, 1918 by the same artist. This was a design for a flag, it reads; “To whom it may concern: The design shown herewith is a composite. Be it known that I, John T. Bentley, design formed of the American, British, and a subject of the King of Great Britain, re-French flags, residing at Tenafly, in the county of Bergen, New Jersey...” Both patents listed above deal with art techniques. The third piece of evidence can be found in, The United States Art Directory and Year-book (1884) pg., 39. It lists two etchings by John T. Bentley, after T. C. Dibdin, St. Owen Cathedral Porch and Abbeville. Lastly and most importantly, information comes from volume 2, pg. 244 of The Proceedings of Canadian Institute, Being a continuation of ‘the Canadian Journal of Science, Literature and History, Toronto, (1883-1884) where the authors thanked Mr. J. Bentley, a Canadian, now living in New York, for sending an artist proof of his picture called the South Porch of St. Ouen. This is clearly the same artist and the same etching as listed above. Thus in conclusion, we know that Tenafly, New Jersey was John T. Bentley’s last place of residence in 1918 and it is also stated that he was a subject of the Queen of Great Britain, hence initially a Canadian. |

Trinity Church: The Old Trinity Church is located at 79 Broadway in lower Manhattan, near the intersection of Wall Street and Broadway, New York, New York. It has been considered one of New York's most famous landmarks since the 19th century. In this original etching, J. T. Bentley depicts a wedding procession walking through the isle of Trinity Church. Behind them, there is a clear view of the Portal Arch Stained Glass windows designed by Richard UpJohn (1802-1878), and the Astor Memorial Altar and Reredos designed by Frederick Clarke Withers (1826-1901). Trinity Church is regarded as one of the first and finest examples of Neo-Gothic architecture in the Unites States. The finely rendered wedding procession in the foreground must obviously have depicted a union of contemporary importance. Wedding Bells in Old Trinity is a striking example of the 19th century architectural interior of this church.
The 19th Century Remarque 'Proof': During the latter nineteenth century many major publishers of engravings and etchings in both England and America issued a small number of 'proof' impressions before publishing the regular edition. Proof impressions were struck before the title of the work was added along the lower margin and were printed on superior papers -- usually china, Japon or vellum. They also contained an added etched image (the 'Remarque') within the lower margin. In J. T. Bentley's, Wedding Bells in Old Trinity (Wall Street and Broadway, Trinity Church Altar, New York) the Remarque provides an image of wedding bells. C. Klackner’s remarque proof impressions were always hand signed by the etcher.
The New York publisher, Christian Klackner, issued proof impressions signed by his artists and designers. These included Winslow Homer, William Magrath, Gustave Mercier, James S. King, Frederick Spiegle, John T. Bentley and Leon Moran. The Remarque Proof impressions printed by C. Klackner were usually limited to an edition of fifty impressions. This is probably the case with Wedding Bells in Old Trinity (Wall Street and Broadway, Trinity Church Altar, New York).
