Alfred Bentley: It is generally concluded
that Alfred Bentley's greatest art was the drypoint engravings he created
near the end of his short life. Kenneth Guichard writes,
"His earlier work, from 1906 to 1915, including portraits, was
unremarkable, but to some of his last landscapes Bentley imparted a
striking poetical tranquillity. ... The artist, while acknowledging
the influence of Frank Short, was a close friend of Malcolm Osborne,
with whom he went on etching tours in France. In these French scenes
is an echo of Corot and the integration of the figures is achieved with
perfection. His last plate, Morlaix, Brittany, was a presentation
plate for the Print Collector's Club and was published in Fine Prints
of the Year of 1923." *

Alfred Bentley studied etching and engraving under Sir Frank
Short at South Kensington. There, he became a lifelong friend of his fellow
classmate, Malcolm Osborne (1880-1963). Throughout the following years
the two artists often worked together and shared the same studio. Alfred Bentley
was elected an Associate of the prestigious Royal Engravers in 1908 and
became a full member in 1913. His etchings and drypoint engravings were
frequently exhibited at both the Royal Academy, London, and at the Royal
Scottish Academy. |

Morlaix, Brittany was Alfred Bentley's last and probably
greatest work of art. It was commissioned by the prestigious Print Collector's
Club in 1923 and thus bears their 'PC' monogramme in the lower left corner
of the plate. This drypoint engraving was also selected for the publication,
Fine Prints of the Year, 1923. Alfred Bentley died of complications
due to World War One related wounds weeks after completing the plate.
His close friend and accomplished etcher/printer, Malcolm Osborne, undertook
the printing of the plate which was issued in a sole, limited edition
of 100 impressions. The original presentation sticker which accompanied
this drypoint engraving is included below. |

What can one personally add about Morlaix, Brittany?
In the 1920's era when there were so many superb British engravers and
etchers, this original drypoint engraving still stands out as an absolute
masterpiece. One would have to look back to the etched art of Samuel Palmer
to find an equal to the poetry and peace expressed in this most accomplished
landscape engraving. |
