Note: | The Temple of Apollo Epicurius, on the Plains of Messenia was commissioned by the Trustees of the British Museum and Published in 1819. In the previous year a major discovery of ancient terra cottas was discovered under the fallen pillars depicted in the foreground. The British Museum, always quick to add to its famous collection of Greek and Roman antiquities, managed to acquire all the discovered treasures. This wonderful aquatint engraved by William James Bennett thus commemorated the Museum's additions to their collection. |

Condition: | Printed on watermarked Whatman '1818' wove paper and with full margins as published by the British Museum in 1819. This is a superb, early impression with a clearly defined plate-mark and it is in excellent condition throughout. |
