Jacobus Belsen: A great early twentieth century painter,
sculptor, engraver and illustrator, Jacobus Belsen managed to build a
large international reputation for his art despite living through some
of the most turbulent, political events and upheavals of the times. Jacobus Belsen
studied art at the St. Petersburg Academy. He then worked as a Professor
of Art at both the Alexander Lyceum and at the St. Petersburg University
for Architects. His major early work included the stained glass windows
for the Hotel d'Europe, St. Petersburg, and murals and stained glass art
for a number of churches and public buildings within Russia. Just before
the outbreak of the Russian Revolution, Jacobus Belsen completed a commissioned
series of woodcuts depicting prominent members of the aristocracy. If
ever there was an example of unfortunate timing in art, this was it! Jacobus
Belsen was thus forced to flee Russia. |
|
Searching for a secure political home, Jacobus Belsen moved to Germany
in 1919. Working in Berlin, he designed furniture and created paintings,
engravings, etchings and woodcuts. As the liberal Weimar era in Germany
took hold, Jacobus Belsen turned some of his talents towards the art of illustration.
Books he both wrote and illustrated include, Russian Winter Pictures,
Figures of the Russian Revolution, Illustrations of Norwegian and Finnish
Tales and Illustrations of Russian Children's Tales. This original
drypoint engraving no doubt hails from this period and is related to his
illustrative art. Here, Jacobus Belsen brilliantly depicts the Russian Winter landscape
with a bold sense of space and sharply defined forms moving within its
vastness. |
|
In time, however, Germany proved to be as dangerous as Russia.
During the early 1930's Jacobus Belsen became one of Germany's best known
satirical artists. His caricatures appeared in leading periodicals and
his favorite target was Adolph Hitler. As well, he illustrated Hafstaengel's
book, Hitler in the Caricature of the World. When Hitler assumed
power, Jacobus Belsen was once again forced to flee his country, or face arrest
and probable execution. |
|
Jacobus Belsen arrived in New York City in 1936. He died
a year later in the month of September. Although little time was afforded
him in America he was commissioned as a principal artist for the Metropolitan
Opera Company, designing both sets and costumes. Clearly, both Jacobus Belsen's
fine art and his life were very eventful. |
