Francois Bellay's original lithograph, La Marchande de Pommes (The Apple Seller), was commissioned for the Galerie du Palais Royal. In 1824, the Duke of Orleans decided to have his collection of then contemporary paintings published as a set of lithographs. Around two hundred lithographs were created by various artists and published in two parts, the first in 1825 and the second in 1829. All were published in Paris and printed by that city's leading lithographic printer, Charles Motte (1785-1836). The British Museum, London, includes an impression of La Marchande de Pommes in its permanent collection. It may be viewed under that museum's registration number, 1860,0728.210. |

La Marchande de Pommes (The Apple Seller), originates from the series of lithographs issued under the title, Galerie lithographiee de son altesse Royale Monseigneur le Duc d'Orleans, now most usually called, Galerie du Palais Royal. In 1824, the Duke of Orleans decided to have his collection of then contemporary paintings published as a set of lithographs. Around two hundred lithographs were created by various artists and published in two parts, the first in 1825 and the second in 1829. The lithographs were printed in a limited edition and were available only to the subscribers, which numbered 487. After publication the lithographic stones were erased.
Michel Martin Drolling 'Martin Drolling': A French painter of portraits and historical scenes, Michel Martin Drolling first studied under his father, Martin Drolling the elder (1752-1827). Beginning around 1806 he became a student of the famous neoclassical painter, Jacques Louis David (1748-1825). He followed in the style of David, particularly in his historical and mythological paintings. For rustic and genre scenes, such as La Marchande de Pommes, Drolling's techniques were more akin to these of his father.
In 1810 Martin Drolling's painting, Colere de Achilles, was awarded the Prix de Rome. Michel Martin Drolling was elected a full member of the French Institute in 1833 and was later elected to the Academie des Beaux-Arts. In 1837 he became a full professor at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts. His students included Jules Breton, Paul Baudry, Alphonse Muraton and Canada's, Cornelius Krieghoff.
