Title: The Music Score
Artist: Bell, Robert Anning (London, 1863 - 1933)
Date: 1898
Medium: Original Lithograph
Publisher: The Studio, London
Source: The Studio
Note: Robert Anning Bell: A turn-of-the-century painter, sculptor, printmaker, mosaic and stained glass artist, Robert Anning Bell was educated at University College School, Westminster School of Art (under Fred Brown) and at the Royal Academy Schools. He completed his education in Paris, under Aime Morot.
Robert Anning Bell first gained national attention as an illustrator, with his drawings appearing in such publications as the English Illustrated Magazine (1891-94) and The Yellow Book (1894-95). From 1894 to 1913 he also illustrated over twenty fine books, such as, A Midsummer Night's Dream (1895), Poems by John Keats (1897), Lamb's Tales from Shakespeare (1899), Grimm's Household Tales (1901), Palgrave's Golden Treasury (1907) and English Fairy Tales (1913).
A Master of the Art Worker's Guild, R. A., Robert Anning Bell taught at Liverpool University, the Glasgow School of Art (1911-1914) and at the Royal College of Art (1918-1924). Among his many artistic accomplishments are his mosaic at the Houses of Parliament, London, and his tympanum over the west door of Westminster Cathedral. Robert Anning Bell was elected a full Academician of the Royal Academy.
During the 1890's Bell was seen as a major figure of both British Art Nouveau and the Arts and Crafts Movement. His illustration work, in particular, was often compared to that of Walter Crane. Yet Robert Anning Bell's individual lithographs from this decade, such as this original example, bear stronger similarities to those of James McNeill Whistler. Both artists were familiar with each other's work and contributed a several lithographs at this time for publication in The Studio.
The Music Score was commissioned by The Studio, in London, in 1898. During the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries this journal was the leading British arts publication. Founded in 1893, the journal frequently commissioned leading contemporary artists for original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts. Contributing artists during the 1890's included Felix Vallotton, James McNeill Whistler, Emil Orlik, Charles Edward Holloway, Hans Thoma, Joseph Pennell, Alexandre Lunois, Fernand Khnopff, Frank Brangwyn and Robert Anning Bell. Bell was commissioned three times for original lithographs by The Studio near the end of the century.
