Anatoly Belkin's original lithograph, "Apartment" bears the date of 1976-1977. I was initially puzzled as to why Belkin gave this large lithograph the English title of "Apartment". The numerous notes, documents and papers one finds within this image are all in Cyrillic, including the artist's own signature. The probable answer appeared when I studied the artist's exhibition history. Anatoly Belkin was a participant in an exhibition entitled, "New Art of the Soviet Union", which was held in Alexandria, Virginia in 1976 and in Washington D. C. in 1977. It is thus likely that "Apartment" was shown at this important exhibition. Also, I have yet to discover whether or not "Apartment" was printed and published in a specific edition. I have been able to unearth a record for only one other impression and it was annotated, "Artist Proof #5". It is thus possible that no edition was published and that "Apartment" exists in only a handful of artist proof impressions. This original lithograph is pencil signed, titled and annotated, "S. P. I. - 1" by the artist along the lower margin. It is a scarce and important example of the famous Russian art by the St. Petersburg artist, Anatoly Belkin. |

Note: | Anatoly Belkin 'Anatoly Pavlovich Belkin': A leading figure of contemporary Russian art, Anatoly Pavlovich Belkin studied art techniques at the I. E. Repin Institute in St. Petersburg (then Leningrad, USSR) and graduated in 1972. As early as 1973 he was one of the youngest artists to participate in exhibitions not sponsored by the Soviet state. In St. Petersburg these artists were tagged, "unofficial", "informal", "nonconformist" or "resistant". They were thus the first wave of Russian artists seeking independence from totalitarian authority, and stood in opposition until the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991. Belkin's work was included in early international expositions of Soviet art, His art was exhibited in Washington in 1977, Montgeron, France in 1978, Bochum, Germany in 1979, and in New York and Basel in 1980. His first solo exhibition was held at the Dzerzhinsky House of Culture, Leningrad in 1977. |
During the following years the art of Anatoly Belkin was the subject of one man shows in Stockholm (1988), New York (1989), London (1990), Paris (1991) and Goteborg (1992). His most controversial exhibition took place in 2004 at the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg. Entitled, A "Tragic Expedition: Swamp Gold", Belkin exhibited over 300 texts, drawings, collages, sculptures, maps, plans and 'archaeological discoveries' to prove that a swamp civilization of gnome like beings once existed. The exhibition may have been an elaborate hoax, but it did intensify one of the recurring themes of Belkin art -- the loss of indigenous cultures and the loss of self within the modern world.
Not confined to any realm of 'pure' art, Anatoly Belkin was the founder and editor of the magazine, "Sobaka.ru", from 1999 to 2005, and, "Vesch.doc" (2005). Throughout his career he has consistently introduced animal and botanical forms and phrases and written passages within his imagery to create deeply thought provoking works of art. These elements clearly can be seen in this scarce 1976-77 lithograph, "Apartment". The picture of the young man tacked to the back wall may very well be a portrait of the artist himself.
Today the art of Anatoly Belkin is included in the collections of the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, The State Russian Museum, St. Petersburg, The State Museum of the History of St. Petersburg, Stedlik Museum, Amsterdam, Institute of Eastern Europe, Bochum, Germany, Zimmerli Art Museum, Rutgers University, New Jersey, Deutsche Bank of New York and the Museum of Russian Art, Montgeron, France.
Note: There are a number of variations of the artist's name when translated from the Russian to the English alphabet. The most frequently found names are Anatoly Belkin, Anatoly Pavlovich Belkin, Anatolii Belkin, Anatolii Paulevich Belkin, Anatoly Paulevich Belkin, Anatolij Belkin and Anatolij Pavlovic Belkin.
