Harrison Begay: Today Harrison Begay
is rightly referred to as the patriarch of twentieth century Navaho art.
Begay began his education at the Fort Wingate Indian School in New Mexico
in 1927 and completed his studies at the Santa Fe Indian School in 1939,
taking art lessons from Dorothy Dunn. After graduation, Harrison Begay was granted
an Indian Commission scholarship which enabled him to attend Black Mountain
College in 1940 and 1941. He then served in the United States Army for
a period of three years. |
|
Harrison Begay began exhibiting his paintings, watercolours and silk-screens
as early as 1946. Since that time his art has won numerous national and
international awards, such as the 1954 Palmes de Academiques from the
Government of France. He has also exhibited in many museums around the
world, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Denver Art Museum,
the Museum of the American Indian, Massachusetts, and the Museum of New
Mexico. |
|
Harrison Begay's most famous images in art deal with the deer and
the horse. With brilliant colour and design he expresses the delicacy
and beauty of these animals. Fawn is thus a prime example of Begay's influential
Navaho art. |
|
Harison Begay co-founded Tewa Enterprises in 1951. It was
one of a scant handful of publishing houses that existed solely to promote
Native Arts. |
Edition: |
Fawn was completely printed and published by the
Navaho Community. Navaho silk-screen art was never numbered in specific
editions during this period. A. Hamilton Mencher also a co-founder of
Tewa Enterprises comments, "All of Tewa's runs consisted of two thousand
impressions of high quality paper using the best quality Nazda silk screen
paints.". |
