Doris Riker Beer's original watercolor, Old Customs House, Nantucket, stands as an accomplished example of her art. Doris Riker Beer was well known for her depictions of landmarks in and around Nantucket Island. Working mostly in the medium of miniature watercolor, she conveyed a sense of depth and detail far greater than the actual size of her art. Old Customs House, Nantucket, for example measures 3 1/2" by 4". This original watercolor is signed and dated in pencil by Doris Riker Beer to the lower right. Natucket's Customs House was established in 1791. William Rotch, a shipping magnate, began construction on the building in 1772, and it first served as his warehouse and offices. In the early nineteenth century the building was sold to an insurance company which operated there until the Great Fire of 1846. The original walls, however, remained and a new building was constructed with the addition of a third story. The U.S. Customs House remained upstairs until 1913. |
