Faenza Ware Plate (Art Treasures of the United Kingdom)

Francis Bedford's original color lithograph, "Faenza Ware plate" was printed and published by the British publisher, Day & Son in 1858 as part of a series entitled, "Art Treasures of the United Kingdom". This Faenza Ware plate was exhibited at the Manchester Exhibition that same year as part of the British collection. The text printed in the left upper margin of this original lithograph reads; “Ceramic Art”, & to the right “Plate 5”. The artist’s name “F. Bedford, Lith.”, the name “J. B. Waring. Dirext.”, and the printer’s details, “Day & Son, Lithrs. to the Queen” are all printed in the lower margin. There is also a description for the plate illustrated in this original lithograph, it reads; "Faenza Ware Plate, From the Soulages Collection". Note:	Francis Bedford: Born in London in 1816, Francis Bedford was undoubtedly an exceptional artist in lithography and early photography. Francis Bedford is important on two artistic levels; firstly, as an early, accomplished color lithographer and, secondly, as a pioneer of landscape and architectural photography. He was also an architect and thus many of his plates in both media deal with this subject. Francis Bedford's first published lithograph dates from 1840 and his first photograph from 1855. Francis Bedford was a founding member of the Photographic Society (1853) and was elected Vice-president of the London Photographic Society (1861).
	Francis Bedford's finest lithographs will be found in such publications as "Art Treasures of the United Kingdom" (1858), "The Churches of York" (1843), "Industrial Arts of the Nineteenth Century at the Great Exhibition" (1853), "The Grammar of Ornament" (1856), and "The Treasury of Ornamental Art" (1858). His original photographs are included in such works as "The Sunbeam" (1856), "The Photographic Art Annual" (1859), "Ruined Abbeys and Castles of Great Britain" (1864), and "Photographic Pictures made by Mr. Francis Bedford during the Tour in the East, in which he Accompanied The Prince of Wales". The Francis Bedford Topographical Photographs Collection is today housed in the Birmingham Central Library. "Faenza Ware Plate" hails from the (1858) "Art Treasures of the United Kingdom".
	Day & Son, London: Some of the most ambitious and accomplished printmaking projects of the Victorian era were launched by the lithographic publishers, Day & Son. The firm began in the mid 1820's under the title of 'Day & Hague' and assumed its more familiar name in 1845. Throughout their early years they printed and published lithographs dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as, hunting scenes, genre depictions and topographical views. In the late 1840's, however, Day & Son came to the forefront as a pioneer of the recently discovered medium of the color lithograph; that is, printing lithographs in color by utilizing a series of meticulously registered tint and color stones. Each color and hue required an individual printing. A complex color lithograph, like "Faenza Ware Plate", was created by using at least twelve separate printings. Thus, apart from the obvious beauty of the original work of art, it represents an important example of one of the most demanding of art techniques. Day & Son was so accomplished in this field that the firm was appointed, 'Royal Lithographers to Queen Victoria'.
	This original lithograph entitled, "Faenza Ware Plate" was printed and published in 1858 as part of a series entitled, "Art Treasures of the United Kingdom". The series concentrated upon the finest examples of Medieval and Renaissance enamels, ceramics, porcelains and stoneware in British collections, such as the Faenza Ware Plate illustrated in this original lithograph. All these pieces were exhibited at the Manchester Exhibition of 1858. Day &. Son was already well established as the leading colour printmaker for the depiction of objects d'art, as five years earlier they had been entrusted with the colour lithographs of the art at the great Crystal Palace Exhibition. The brilliant lithographer for this original work of art was Francis Bedford.
	Both artistically and historically, the lithographic art of Day & son is of great importance. It's amazing to consider that a colour lithograph of such perfect clarity, detail and complex range of colouration was created at such an early date.
