Karl-Conrad-Friedrich Bauer 'Karl Bauer': A German painter, etcher, lithographer
and illustrator, Karl Bauer first studied art at the Gymnasium die Kunstschule
in his native Stuttgart. He then entered the Kunstakademie, Munich, and
studied under Professor Wilhelm von Lindenschmit. Karl Bauer's education concluded
in Paris in 1893 at the Academie Julian. During the following ten years
he travelled extensively and both lived and worked in Belgium, Holland,
England and Italy. |
|
In the early years of the twentieth century Karl Bauer returned
to Stuttgart and became a leading member of the Secessionist movement there.
In his paintings and original prints, Karl Bauer proved to be a master of figure studies
and portraits. In the latter category he etched and painted Germany's most
famous political, scientific and artistic figures, both past and present,
such as, Menzel, Boecklin, Bismarck, Nietzsche and Frederick the Great.
His services were also called upon to illustrate a number of fine books.
Among his best work in this field is Heine's Livre des Chants and The
Temptation of Saint Anthony. |
|
During the 1920's many of Karl Bauer's fine etchings and engravings
were published by Wohlgemuth and Lissner, Berlin. In all likelihood, that this study
was commissioned by this publisher. |
|
Today examples of Karl Bauer's original etchings, lithographs
and engravings are found in the public galleries at Munich, Dresden and
Stuttgart. |
