Henry William Batley's original mezzotint engraving, "Temptation" was published in London in 1886. As this is a proof , printed before the addition of the title along the lower margin, the designation, "Temptation", is my invention. In some respects this captivating image is reminiscent of the Garden scene from Goethe’s "Faust", when Margaret plucks the star-flower with Mephistopheles in the background. The remarque engraving in the lower left margin, however, depicts a serpent entwined around a branch, thus prompting a remembrance of Satan, Eve and the Tree of Knowledge. This original 19th century mezzotint engraving is a fine example of the art created by British artist, Henry Batley. |

Note: | Henry William Batley 'Henry W. Batley': An interesting figure in England’s nineteenth century Aesthetic Movement, Henry W. Batley was not only an original etcher and engraver but a designer of Aesthetic furniture, wallpapers, textiles and carpets. Batley, in fact, designed the interiors for Doulton’s terra-cotta house which was exhibited at the Paris Exhibition of 1878. Shortly thereafter H. W. Batley was awarded the cross of the Legion d’Honneur. |
Henry William Batley authored and illustrated the book, "Etched studies for Interior Decoration" (1883). In 1908 he founded the Guild of Decorators Syndicate, in London. |
|
Henry Batley exhibited his etchings and engravings at both the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and at the Royal Academy from 1881 to 1894. In this medium he was known for landscapes, portraits and imaginary scenes. The Victoria & Albert Museum, London, includes an of "Temptation" in its permanent collection (S.3720-2009).
In a manner, "Temptation" incorporates Henry Batley’s work as both a visual artist and as a designer. From its lush floral motifs to its intricate lines, waves and patterns within the background, "Temptation" stands as a beautiful example of English nineteenth century Aestheticism.
