Norman Arthur Bate: A New York State printmaker,
illustrator and painter, Norman Arthur Bate earned his bachelor's degree
in illustration at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. He then took his master's
degree in printmaking and painting at the University of Illinois. Early
in his career, Norman Arthur Bate gained recognition as a fine illustrator, particularly
in the field of children's books. His first book was published in 1953
and at least six others were printed during the following years. Three
of his books were published in both England and the United States. |

Norman Arthur Bate became the graphic arts instructor and
Professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology in 1957 and held that
post until his retirement. During the following years he was very active
in the field of original printmaking, most particularly creating prints
in the mediums of aquatint and etching. These finely created prints and
his other illustrated works won for him honors from institutions as the
Joseph E. Pennell Award, the Library of Congress, Washington DC, the Paul
J. Sachs Award, the Fogg Museum, Harvard University, the Dana Museum Award,
the Boston Printmakers Annual Award and the Wichita Art Museum Award. |

of Rochester, Norman Arthur Bate's original aquatints and etchings are highly regarded
for their strong architectural elements and textural qualities. Remnants
of Night and Tide was both printed and published by the artist in a limited
edition of 200 signed s. It is one of Norman Bate's largest
and most impressive aquatints. |

Printed upon 'Rives' watermarked paper and with wide, full
margins as printed by the artist in 1959. Containing slight rippling due
to printing pressure and faint matte burning in the outer margins , else
a strong and in good condition throughout. Signed, titled,
dated and numbered, '5/200' by Norman Bate in pencil under the plate-mark.
Altogether, Remnants of Night and Tide represents a superb, original example
of the art of Norman Arthur Bate. |
