Vincenzo Basevolana

Vincenzo Basevolana - Tambourine Girl

Tambourine Girl

Vincenzo Basevolana's "Tambourine Girl" is signed and dated by the artist to the lower right. It depicts a peasant girl dressed in her native custume, playing the tambourine and dancing to the music. The young man beside her, (also in native costume) seems to be more intent upon watching her than playing his own instrument. Tambourine Girl a fine, original example of early twentieth century Italian genre painting and the art of Vincenzo Basevolana.

Title: Tambourine Girl
Artist: Basevolana, Vincenzo (Italian, active, 1880 - 1910)
Date: 1905
Medium: Original Oil Painting on Canvas
Note: Vincenzo Basevolana painted a number of Italian genre scenes from 1880 to 1910. Most of his paintings concentrate upon small groupings of figures or individual portrait studies. He was particularly well received for his ability to render atmospheric effects and form and colour. As one can see in Tambourine Girl, this is clearly the case in Vincenzo Basevolana's detailed and finely delineated rendering of the regional costumes of the two musicians portrayed.
From the mid nineteenth century until the beginning of World War One in 1914 genre scenes dominated Italian Schools of painting. Idealized scenes of peasant life often portrayed harvesters, flower sellers, shepherds, gypsies, dancers and musicians. Such famous Italian painters as Giovanni Battista Torriglia, Giuseppe Aureli, Luis Alvarez Catala, Luigi Ferrazzi, Giacomo Mantegazza, Pietro Saltini, Alessandro Sani and Eugenio Zampighi created their art mainly within this medium.
