Francesco Bartolozzi is undoubtedly the most famous stipple engraver. "Young Man's Head, 'In His Majesty's Collection'" is based upon the drawing housed in the Royal Collection, Windsor created by the Bolognese artist, Annibale Carracci . It is one of Bartolozzi's largest and most impressive works of art in this medium. Here, the tones and hues of facial features are rendered with the utmost delicacy. It is printed upon early nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as created by Francesco Bartolozzi in 1807 for John Chamberlain's set of original engravings and etchings entitled, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty’s Collection", and bears the text; "From the Original Drawing by Annibal Carracci, "Eng. by F. Bartolozzi R.A. Historical Engraver to his Majesty", and the publication line, "Publish'd as the Act directs April. 15. 1807 by J. Chamberlaine Scotland Yard"; in under the image, and numbered 'Pl. IX' in the upper right corner. This is an outstanding original example of the art by the Italian / British artist, Francesco Bartolozzi and the art of Annibale Carracci.

Note: Francesco Bartolozzi: Born in Florence, Italy in 1727, Francesco Bartolozzi is undoubtedly England’s most famous stipple engraver of the late eighteenth century. He studied under the Florentine artists, Ignazio Hugford (1703 – 1775) and Giovanni Domenico Ferretti (1692 – 1778). In 1748 Bartolozzi went to Venice and worked for the engraver and print dealer Joseph Wagner (1706 – 1786) where he began his career engraving plates after the Italian masters. Then in 1764 Francesco Bartolozzi was invited by the King of England, King George III (1738 – 1820) to come to London to engrave the drawings of Guercino ‘Giovanni Francesco Barbieri’ (1591 – 1666), Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527 – 1596) and other Italian artists in the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle. Shortly after, he was appointed ‘Engraver to the King’. In 1768, Bartolozzi received the honour of being the first engraver to gain full membership into the prestigious Royal Academy. In 1802, and after nearly forty years in London, Bartolozzi was offered the prominent position as the director of the National Academy in Lisbon. He remained in Lisbon until his death in 1815.
  A new printmaking technique had recently come to the fore in England at this time and, although Francesco Bartolozzi made no claim to its invention, his name is forever linked with the 'stipple' engraving. Briefly, a stipple engraving is created by using masses of flicks or dots rather than solid lines, making it a more tonal composition. More than any other artist, Francesco Bartolozzi mastered this subtle medium.
  Francesco Bartolozzi quickly recognized that this very demanding method of original printmaking was best suited for decorative works and portraits as well as scenes displaying flesh tones. He thus set up his famous London workshop which published renderings of either sentimental or mythological subjects, with such well known painters as Francis Wheatley (1747 - 1801), Angelica Kauffmann (1741 - 1807), Giovanni Battista Cipriani (1727 - 1785) and Lady Diana Beauclerk (1734 - 1808) specifically creating designs for him to engrave. Bartolozzi's success with the stipple was enormous. He was one of the first engravers granted a full membership to the Royal Academy, and in the last decades of the eighteenth century, a large following of English and transplanted Italian students sat in his studio to learn his techniques. His students included such fine artists as Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840), and Benedetto Pastorini (1741 – 1839).(Some of his students later engraved the popular Cries of London series.) Stippling, however, was destined to live a very short life. It was extremely laborious and time consuming and soon gave way to the more convenient and mass-produced forms of printmaking in the nineteenth century.

  Annibale Carracci: The Bolognese brothers, Annibale Carracci (Bologne, 1560 - Rome, 1609) and Agostino Carracci (Bologna, 1557 - Parme, 1602) and their cousin Ludovico Carracci (Bologna, 1555 - 1619), were prominent figures that stood in opposition to the prevailing Mannerism of late 16th century Italian painting. After studying art under his uncle in Parma, Annibale Carracci first worked in Venice and Bologna.
  In the early 1580’s, the Carracci brothers founded the Accademia degli Incamminati (Academy of the Progressives) in Bologna. They laid special emphasis upon drawing from life and clear draughtsmanship which became associated with the artists of the Bolognese School.
  Around 1600 Annibale Carracci was invited to Rome by Cardinal Odoardo Farnese to decorate the Farnese Palace. During the next four years some of his most famous frescoes were created there. Regarded as a master of both figure and landscape painting, Annibale Carracci directly influenced such artists as Domenichino, Claude Lorrain and Poussin.
  John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty's Collection, John Chamberlaine's greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
  In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year, John Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
  The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 "Engravings from the Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point, John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
