Pietro Santi Bartoli 'Pietro Bartoli': A seventeenth century
Italian etcher and engraver, Pietro Santi Bartoli first apprenticed as a painter
under both Nicolas Poussin and Le Maire. Early in his career he abandoned
painting in favour of engraving and, during the second half of the century,
produced a large body of work, both in the form of series and individual
prints. In the former category Pietro Bartoli created the engravings for such
sets as "Admiranda Romanorum Antiquitatum" (81 plates), "Colonna Trajana" (128
plates), "Raphael's Bible" (42 plates) and "Sepolcur antichi Romani"
(123 plates). He also was commissioned to create large engravings after
such masters as Giulio Romano, Lanfranco, Pietro da Cortona, and the Carracci
brothers. |

"Thermae Agrippae" (Hot Baths of Agrippa) hails from a 1699 publication entitled "Romane
magnitudinus Monumenta". Altogether the series contained one hundred and
thirty eight full page plates delineating the ancient monuments of Rome.
This particular plate deals with the hot baths of Agrippa. Marcus Vipsanius
Agrippa (63 B.C.-12 B.C.) was both a high ranking statesman and general.
The son-in-law of Augustus, he commanded the Roman fleet in the battle
of Actium. He also contributed in the building of three of Rome's
principal aqueducts and the Pantheon. |
