Cesar Baldaccini 'Cesar'

Untitled Composition

Title: Untitled Composition
Artist: Baldaccini, Cesar 'Cesar' (Marseille, 1921 - Paris, 1998)
Date: c. 1965
Medium: Original Lithograph in Colours
Note: Cesar Baldaccini 'Cesar': If Cesar Baldaccini was not France's most famous sculptor of the later twentieth century then he was clearly the most infamous. His extraordinary life began in a Marseille ghetto where he was forced to leave school and work at the age of thirteen. Taking night classes at a local art school he quickly drew much attention and enrolled at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Cesar moved permanently to the French capital in 1943 and lived above the studio of the famous Italian sculptor, Giacometti. At the studio he met such luminaries as Picasso, Cocteau and Sartre.
Cesar Baldaccini's first major one man show was held at the Salon de Mai in Paris in 1955. The entire show sold out and he was invited in 1957 to participate in the prestigious Biennale in Venice. During the following three years the artist produced many memorable works in both sculpture and original printmaking. Of his creations, Cesar stated, "I start with an idea. That is the beginning of the adventure. I continue in that direction until I encounter a separate reality that is detached from me and exists in the material and its surrounding space. It's as though something else was asking to exist, to be whatever it wants to be."
In 1960, however, Cesar Baldaccini completely shocked the international art world. At the now famous 1960 Salon de Mai exhibition he presented Parisians with three solid blocks of compressed cars. Inspired by a film about car dumps and wreckers, the artist had actually taken over an old French factory with a giant press in which to compress cars and other heavy metals. He wrote, "Although I had received a classical academic training, my vision changed through my work with scrap iron. I entered the factory world and learned to approach recuperated materials in their own language."
Cesar Baldaccini's original lithographs from this period explore similar concerns. For instance, in this example, the artist examines a dense world of compressed metals -- "recuperated materials" do create "their own language".
After 1960, exhibitions of Cesar Baldaccini's art were held in many international centres including, New York, London, Rome, Berlin and Paris. His art is now listed in most major international collections. To this day he remains one of France's most revolutionary and controversial artists.
