Note: William Baillie will forever be linked to one unfortunate incident. He acquired the badly worn plate of Rembrandt's famous etching, the Hundred Guilder print, and endeavored to improve the etching by re-working it. Such a mistake, however, does not conceal the fact that, William Baillie, although an 'amateur', possessed considerable talent.
William Baillie came to London in 1741, not to study art but law. Several years later he decided to enlist in the army and served at the Battle of Culloden. He retired with the rank of Captain and was appointed Commissioner of Stamps, a post he held until 1795. During these years he also created etchings and mezzotint engravings after the art of the old masters. In total, William Baillie artistic oeuvre includes over two hundred and fifty original prints.
The great London print publisher, John Boydell, published two folio volumes in 1792 of the works of Captain Baillie, entitled, A Series of 225 Prints and Etchings after Rembrandt, Teniers, G. Dou, Poussin and Others. This fine soft ground etching hails from that publication and belongs to the second and final edition which was issued in 1822.
