Note: | Otto Henry Bacher 'Otto Bacher': One of America's foremost artists of the late nineteenth century, Otto Henry Bacher first studied art under Willis Seaver Adams in Cleveland before entering the Royal Academy in Munich, Germany, in 1978. From late 1879 through 1882, Otto Bacher lived and worked in both Florence and Venice. In 1880 he formed a close relationship in Venice with none other than Whistler. The two artists worked together on a number of occasions, producing etchings of Venice which shocked contemporary critics for their freedom of expression. These remarkable etchings are now considered as cornerstones of modern art. |
Otto Bacher returned to America in 1883 and taught at the Cleveland Academy of Art. Several years later he settled in New York and exhibited his art there as well as in London, Philadelphia and Paris. Otto Bacher was elected an Associate of the National Academy of Design.
Schwabelweiss dates from the one year period Otto Bacher lived and worked in Germany. He had first experimented with etching in 1876 but it was in Germany where the art of etching became for him a primary concern. In total he created twenty-four etchings of Munich and the environs along the Danube which were later published in a portfolio entitled, 'Etchings in Bavaria'. Schwabelweiss clearly shows Bacher's great artistic skills from this period of his career.
The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879-1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as James David Smillie, Thomas Moran, Otto Henry Bacher, Edmund Henry Garrett, Stephen Parrish, Henry Farrer, Eliza Greatorex, Charles Adams Platt and William Merritt Chase.
Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century.
