Note: |
Amalie Baader: Listed as an 'amateur' etcher,
Amalie Baader studied printmaking techniques under J. Dorner, the director
of the gallery at Munich. She is primarily known for her fine portraits
after the art of Rembrandt and some Italian masters. She later married and
took the name of her husband, Van Schattenhofer. |
|
Judging from the fine work in this original etching one can only wonder
how far Amalie Baader's career would have advanced is she had not been shackled
with the then mostly female appellation of 'amateur'. In a strangely defensive
comment one scholar wrote that Baader “practiced it (etching) for amusement,
not as a profession.” * I find little amusing in the fact that such talent
was not allowed its deserving place. |
