Note: |
Umetaro Azechi: One of Japan's greatest woodcut artists
of the last half of the twentieth century, Umetaro Azechi was born into
a family of poor farmers. With ambitions of becoming an artist he moved
to Tokyo in 1921 and got a job delivering newspapers. Shortly thereafter
he gained acceptance to the Japan Creative Print Association and was both
taught printmaking techniques and encouraged by Unichi Hiratsuka. |
|
Umetaro Azechi first exhibited his woodcuts in Tokyo in 1930. It
wasn't, however, until after the Second World War ended that he began
to emerge as a major modern artist. Scenes of his native Shikoku Island
landscape and of Ainu folk customs were featured but by far the most dominating
motif were the mountains and his artistic portrayals of mountaineering.
(Umetaro Azechi, in fact, became an authority on mountaineering and wrote a number
of books on this subject.) His bold and simplistic use of both color and
line and his ability to express emotional imagery by these methods influenced
many contemporary Japanese woodcut artists. |
|
During his distinguished career Umetaro Azechi's woodcuts were included
in major international exhibitions in England, Germany, Switzerland, Japan,
Brazil and the United States. Today his woodcuts are included in the permanent
collections of the Achenbach Foundation, San Francisco, the Machida City
Museum of Graphic Art, Tokyo, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston
Museum of Fine Arts and the British Museum, London. |
