Note: |
Johannes Maximilian Avenarius 'Johannes Avenarius': A German Expressionist
painter, etcher, lithographer and illustrator, Johannes Maximilian Avenarius is best
known for his portraits of leading figures in the arts and letters. He
began to exhibit his art in German cities shortly before the beginning
of World War One. Avenarius accepted the post of Professor at the Kunsthochschule
fur Textilindustrie, Plauen, in 1930. He moved to Berlin and settled there
in 1946. |
|
Johannes Avenarius's art was often associated with that
of the famous German playwright and poet, Gerhart Hauptmann (Germany, 1862-1946).
He first met Hauptmann in 1907. Avenarius painted at least two portraits
of the writer and illustrated his works in various mediums in 1921, 1922
and 1946. |
|
Johannes Avenarius's original lithographs are often compared stylistically
to those of Oskar Kokoschka. To be sure, the lithographic portraits created
by both artists at this time are charged with psychological intensity.
Unfortunately, lithographs by Johannes Avenarius appear infrequently in today's
art market. The major reason is that he printed these fine works of art
in very small editions. Portrait of an Artist, for example, exists in
an edition of only twenty s. Grasping a brush in one hand and
a cigar in the other, it is probably a self-portrait of the artist and
stands as one of the largest and most compelling portraits created at
this time by an Expressionist artist. |
