Dieter Asmus: A major German painter and printmaker Dieter Asmus studied
art at the Hochschule fur bildende Kunste, Hamburg, from 1960 to 1967.
It was at this institute that he came together with such fellow students
as Peter Nagel (b. 1942), Nikolaus Stortenbecker (b. 1940) and Dietmar
Ullrich (b. 1940) to form the artists' group known as 'Zebra'. Zebra was
initiated in Hamburg in 1965. During the following decades these for painters
and printmakers exhibited both collectively and individually in both Germany
and elsewhere. Briefly, Zebra took its roots from Photorealism. Color and
form, however, were employed in an anti-realistic manner in order to dissociate
a subject from any specific meaning. Strangely, such super realist imagery
often took on surreal elements, particularly in the paintings and prints
of Dieter Asmus. |

Since 1970 the art of Dieter Asmus has been exhibited at major galleries
