Stephen Arthurs' philosophical and historical interest in war is one of the primary concerns of his art. In this painting entitled, "Limbering up: A Society's Metaphysics is Its Beliefs...", we see the preparations for battle from an aerial standpoint. The perspective almost completely divorces us from any 'action' --instead we begin to view lines and rhythms. It's almost as if we are watching a battle of ants. Perhaps that's the way our conflicts have been viewed in Heaven. The soldier's uniforms are accurate portrayals from the Napoleonic wars. "Limbering up: A Society's Metaphysics is Its Beliefs..." is an original miniature acrylic painting created by by Stephen Arthurs in 1989. |
