Moise Arnaud: A strongly regarded French landscape
painter, Moise Arnaud was known equally for his work in watercolour and
oil. His work first gained public recognition around 1910 and was included
in major French exhibitions until after 1935. Arnaud was a full member
of the influential Societe des Independants. |
|
The landscapes of Moise Arnaud stand as fascinating examinations
of the relationships between line and colour. With bold strokes, he would
construct clusters of shapes and colours, building up rhythms and patterns
and yet remaining true to representational forms. The French countryside
around Montfermeil was a lifelong inspiration to his art and Arnaud returned
to paint this area through the years. Montfermeil depicts a landscape
scene in spring. Here, Moise Arnaud employs his mastery to portray the awakening
of life. |
|
On the original backing of the watercolour, a previous owner
had glued a reproduction of another Moise Arnaud composition, which was published
in the French art journal, L' Image. This is included with the documentation. |
