Dutch master: This beautiful seventeenth century
etching has an interesting documented history. Initially an etching based
upon either a Rembrandt drawing or painting was created by Salomon Savery.
Savery (1594-1666) was one of Holland's most prolific printmakers. He
etched landscapes, ceremonial views and portraits both after his own design
and those of his contemporaries. In total he etched at least four portraits
after the designs of Rembrandt. Young Man (Portrait of a Gengleman Facing Right) was created around
1640 and went through three states of minor alterations before being printed
in its final state in 1654 for the Amsterdam publication, De Grooten
Emblemata. |
|
Several years later the image again appeared as an individual
etching. A comparison between this original etching and Savery's work
reveals two major differences. In this version the figure is reversed
and in the upper right Rembrandt's monogramme appears with the date, 1633.
Otherwise, the work of this contemporary Dutch master shows as much (if
not more) talent than the etched art of Savery. The tonal values of the
face and the textures of the man's apparel, in particular, are rendered
with the utmost skill and delicacy. It is obviously a creation of a highly
gifted artist. |
