Note: |
Jost Amman: A celebrated German printmaker in the
tradition of Durer, Aldegrever and others, surprisingly little is known
of the actual life of Jost Amman. The son of a distinguished, Swiss professor
of logic, rhetoric, Latin and Greek, Amman was born in Zurich in 1561
and it is believed he studied in Basil. He moved to Nuremberg (then one
of the greatest cities in the world) in 1561 and may have worked designing
woodcuts with Virgil Solis. At any rate, when Solis died in the plague
of the following year, Jost Amman took his place as the chief designer of woodcuts
for Nuremberg and Frankfurt publishers. |
|
During the following years, Jost Amman created woodcuts for some
of the greatest illustrated books of his time. One may find his art in
such diverse titles as the Bible, Livy's History of Rome, Flavius's
Jewish War, Reynard the Fox, the Kunstbuchlin, (1578),
books on hunting, warfare, cooking and women's fashion. |
|
Unlike those before him, Jost Amman did not seek grandiose statements
in his art. Instead, he was the first to leave us a complete visual record
of the life of the people -- their habits, customs, manners of dressing
and ways of working. For this reason alone, Amman's woodcuts are tremendously
valuable. But even a brief look at The Market shows us that the
details are rendered with so much accuracy that Jost Amman must have drawn
them from life. And the boy with the voracious appetite in the lower left
corner is his delightful artistic touch from many centuries ago. |
