Henry Alken's "The Progress of Steam" is an original hand-coloured etching printed on laid paper and with large margins as published by S. & J. Fuller in London in 1828. With its good natured caricatures of the fashions of the day and its wonderful rendition of one of the 19th century automobile, "The Progress of Steam" is a fine, original example of the satirical art created by the British artist, Henry Alken. |

Note: | Henry Thomas Alken 'Henry Alken': Perhaps Britain's most famous painter, etcher and aquatint engraver of sporting subjects, Henry Alken first studied art under his father and J. T. Barker Beaumont. The first engravings based upon Henry Alken's designs were published in 1813 and the artist himself had his first engravings and etchings published in 1815. Henry Alken's art reached its height of popularity in the 1820's and 1830's, when he engraved not only large, dramatic sporting scenes, but original etchings that rest firmly in the genres of satire and humour. |
During the early 1800's the English satirical etching had reached its finest era with such famous artists as Gillray, Heath, Rowlandson and Cruikshank. Henry Alken's work in this field was equal to any, with his Symptoms series of etchings and his fine, individual prints such as The Progress of Steam.
At this time, English satirical prints were most often coloured by hand before being offered for sale. Such is the case with this original etching. Today, satirical etchings from this great era are collected not only for their wonderful humour but for their historical importance. Obviously, with its good natured caricatures of the fashions of the day and its wonderful rendition of one of the first ancestors of the automobile, The Progress of Steam H. Alken's Illustration for Modern Prophesy or Novelty, for the Year 1829 is a prime example of the best of English satire.
