Albert F. Wood's original advertising poster "Satin Skin Powder" is printed upon wove paper with full margins as published in 1903 by the Calvert Lithographing Company in Detroit, Michigan. It is advertising their 'Satin Skin Cream' and 'Satin Skin Powder' and offers their product in four tints, flesh, white, pink and brunet. The Albert F. Wood, MFR., company was an American company involved in the manufacture and selling of cosmetics such as, creams, face powder, soaps, perfumes and other similar products from the late 19th century and into the first decade of the 20th century. "Satin Skin Powder" is a fine, original example of the early American advertising poster. |

Note: | The Albert f. Wood Manufacturing Company Active, c.1885-1910: This original lithographic advertising poster is promoting two different products, ‘Satin Powder’ and ‘Satin Skin Cream’, both manufactured by the Albert F. Wood Mfg., Company. The advertising label above the image of a Victorian woman holding a fan reads; Satin Skin Powder 4 Tints, Flesh, White, Pink Brunet.”. The text printed on the fan reads; “Don’t you want a satin skin?” The label below the image reads; “Satin Skin Cream, Copyright 1903 by Albert F. Wood, MFR., The Satin Toilet Specialties, Detroit, Mich.”. The image also depicts two large containers extolling the virtues of the natural ingredients and healing powers of their products. The first is a tin for Satin Skin cream. The text on that lid reads; “Made with Healing Herbs, Milk of Plants, Beautifying balsams, and Perfuming Flowers, - Gives, And Preserves a Satin Skin Nourishes Away Early Wrinkles. Keeps Hands Soft, Supple, White…” and the second is a tin for ‘Satin Skin Powder’ this label reads; “It’s Beneficial to the Skin Concealing Blemishes and Adding a Charming Fairness. Perfection for Nursery Use ...”. The Albert F. Wood, MFR., company was active from the late 19th century and into the first decade of the 20th century. It was involved in the manufacture and selling of cosmetics such as, creams, face powder, soaps, perfumes and other similar products. The Boston Public Library Print Department lists an of this original lithograph in its collection, File Name: 09.03.000088. |
Albert f. Wood (born Fenton, Mich., (Genesee), July 22 1868-?), was the son of Alvah Ulysses and Sarah (Sheldon) Wood. He was educated in public schools and at Ann Arbor. Albert initiated the manufacture of perfumery and toilet specialties in his own name in 1885. * “The Book of Detroiters“, Albert Nelson Marquis, 1908. I would presume it refers to the date Albert founded his firm, the ‘Albert F. Wood Mfr. Company‘.
Albert Wood had a brother by the name of Sheldon A. Wood (1859-1949). They were descendants of Henry Wood, 1630, a Puritan from Plymouth, Massachusetts. Both brothers are listed in the National Register of The Society Sons of American Revolution., Principal events of the American Revolution (9587), page 594. Sheldon A. Wood worked with, or for his brother Albert f. Wood. Recently, there was an interesting item listed on the web connecting the brothers to the Wood firm. It was a small hand-written order booklet dating from 1903 to 1907 by Sheldon A Wood. According to the owner of this item, the booklet contained daily detailed accounts and records of the Albert F. Wood Perfume Mfg. Co. of Detroit. It included business connections and information concerning his travels from coast to coast. Another article concerning Mr. Shelton A. Wood notes that he was a prominent Attorney living at 146 West Fort Street, Detroit (not far from his brother's company). Further information can be found in ‘The Indianapolis Star’ February 5, 1911. The Michigan Alumnus, 1948 - Volume 55, page 423 contains the obituary notice for Albert A. Shelton.
Albert Nelson Marquis also notes in his book, “The Book of Detroiters“, that Yachting and automobiles where Albert’s hobby. There is a fine 1908 Stevens-Duryea Model U Limousine in the collection of the Henry Ford Institution in Dearborn, Michigan, Identifier: 28.88.1. This auto was a gift from the Wood brothers, Sheldon A. and Albert F. Wood.
Advertisements for products manufactured by the Albert F. Wood Mfr. Company appear in several American newspapers. One example was posted in The Minneapolis Journal, dated June 05, 1901. It not only promoted the company’s ’Skin Cream’ product claiming it was a magical skin curative for cuts, burns, bruises, scratches chaps…”, but also offered free samples. Another advertisement was published in ‘The Fort Wayne Journal-Gazette‘, November 27 1902. It claimed the product was made at the Laboratory of Albert F. Wood Mfr., Detroit, Michigan. ‘The Atlanta Constitution’ issue published June 7, 1908 also posted an ad for this product. And, the latest advertisement we were able to locate was posted in ‘The Monroe Count Mail, Thursday, October 21 1909 by the B. M. Hyde Drug Co., located at 202-206 Main Street, E. in Rochester, New York. It offered Albert F. Wood’s ‘Satin Skin Powder’ for 20 cents.
Well, both brothers were still alive and the business was certainly active from 1909 to 1910. This information was obtained from the ‘Encyclopaedia of Perfume, Perfume Houses’, Volume W,X,Y,Z, Chapter One, Page 3. Their records note that the Wood Brothers’ business was established by Albert F. Wood in Detroit, Michigan around 1890. It also includes a list of the fragrances launched by the Wood firm from 1899 to 1910 with names such as, Satin Scent, 400, Blushing Rose, Cup Idee, English Hawthorne, Lavandar Flowers, and so on.
As for the location of the perfume (cosmetic) manufacturing firm , “The Book of Detroiters“ edited by Albert Nelson Marquis dated 1908 and the later edition published in 1910 confirm the office location for the firm was at the Wood Laboratory Building, Cor., Fort Street and Trumbull Ave. and Albert’s home address was at 164 Fort St. W., Detroit, Michigan. This last bit of information also confirms the firm was still in business around 1910. So far, no further records for the Albert F. Wood Mfg., company have been found after that date.
The Advertising Posters: The American poster began from modest black and white experiments in the 1870's and reached its artistic peak by the turn of the century. American companies were quick to recognize the potential of the original chromolithographic poster and its artistic technique. Advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual imagery and in all the following decades they were creating the most expensive and most creative art, of which the large poster, such as this original lithograph advertising "Satin Skin Powder" was the ultimate example.
Color Lithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Once photography set in, that was the end of the original chromolithographic poster due to the fact that it was too expensive to continue paying the artists to create them and photography as a means of mass production was infinitely cheaper. Unfortunately, because of both their size and manner in which they were handled very few can be found in good condition. The few that survived the mishaps of time offer the collector a rare and important combination of history, artistry and pure entertainment.
