Clifford Isaac Addams 'Clifford Addams': An important American
painter, etcher and engraver, Clifford Isaac Addams studied art first in the United
States before leaving for continued studies in Europe. He is known to have
both visited and worked in Belgium, Holland, Spain, France, Italy and, most
particularly, England. Adams, in fact, maintained working studios in both
London and New York City throughout the first three decades of the twentieth
century. |
|
In Europe, a major influence upon Clifford Addams's development was
James McNeill Whistler (1834-1903). Addams studied under Whistler in the
mid 1890's and from 1897 to 1903 (the year of Whistler's death), maintained
a close friendship. During his last years Whistler befriended both Clifford
Adams and his newly married wife and painter, Inez Addams. Many letters
between Whistler and this couple are now housed at the Centre for Whistler
Studies, University of Glasgow. |
|
Clifford Addams first exhibited his art in Paris, in 1901,
and in London, in 1904. Several years later he was also exhibiting in New
York, Boston, Philadelphia and Chicago. He was also a full member of the
Chicago Society of Etchers, the Philadelphia Society of Etchers and the
Society of American Etchers. Today his art is included in such major collections
as the Art Institute of Chicago, The Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts,
the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, The Library of Congress, The Smithsonian
Institute and the National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC. |
|
Most of Clifford Addams's fine etchings and engravings were
created between 1901 and 1925. Many depict street scenes in and around London.
Addams appears to have printed most of his art himself and mainly in very
small editions. The largest recorded edition is 75 s, while others
were often printed in s of ten or less. Seething Lane, London
might be a unique . Under the plate-mark to the lower left Adams
has written, "1/1 imp." This marvelous drypoint engraving of Seething Lane in London clearly
displays the artist's talents of capturing the atmosphere of both crowd
scenes and architecture. |
