Note: | Day & Son, London: The most famous early Victorian firm of lithographic printing was by created William Day (1797 - 1845) and Louis Haghe (1806 - 1895) in London in 1829. Throughout their initial years, Day and Haghe printed lithographs dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as hunting scenes, topographical views and genre depictions. Their lithographs were so meticulously conceived and technically advanced that in 1838, Day and Haghe were appointed 'Lithographers to the Queen'. After William's death in 1845, the firm became known as 'Day & Son' and in the mid-Victorian era it led the way as a pioneer of the recently developed medium of the lithograph printed in colours. |
"Ornamental Cover of a Colour Box designed by J. Sliegh for Ackermann & Co." was printed and published in 1852 as part of a series, entitled, Industrial Arts of the Nineteenth Century at the Great Exhibition. This was the famous 'Crystal Palace' Exhibition where the arts and technical accomplishments of the nineteenth century were showcased as never before. The Day & Son Portfolio concentrated on many of these innovations publishing 158 full colour lithographs on subjects such as sculpture in bronze and terra cotta, stained glass, ornamental work and many other areas.
For many years, these large, full-colour lithographs have been in constant demand both for their historic and artistic value. It's amazing to consider that this original work of lithographic art, with its perfect clarity, detail and range of the colouration (including gold) was made at this early date.
Rudolph Ackermann: (Germany, 1764 - London, 1834): London's most famous early nineteenth century publisher of original prints and illustrated books, Rudolph Ackermann founded his publishing empire in 1796. By 1815 he was internationally praised for his detailed miniature engravings, which appeared in his Forget Me Not annuals, his superb architectural studies and his landscapes and topographical views. His larger prints were most often issued in sets or portfolios and for these he commissioned some of the finest artists of the day, such as Samuel Prout and Thomas Rowlandson. Ackermann's larger views were usually created in the mediums of lithography, aquatint or soft ground etching. Some of his best known sets of subjects and views are The Microcosm of London (1808), History of the Abbey Church of St. Peter's, Westminster (1812), The History of the University of Oxford (1814), The English Dance of Death (1815) and The History of the Royal Residences (1829).
