A. Hoen & Company: An early, original color lithograph (chromolithograph) for plug tobacco, Winner Plug Tobacco, depicts a fantasy steeplechase through a large stirrup. The advertising company, British-American Tobacco, was an amalgamation of Britain's Imperial Tobacco Company and the American Tobacco Company. Large labels, such as this original example, were designed to be pasted onto crates and barrels of tobacco. As such, very few examples have survived. Winner Plug Tobacco is printed upon fine wove, nineteenth century paper and with full margins. It is a fine, original example the art printed by A. Hoen and Company and of early American advertising. |

Note: | A. Hoen & Company: Born in Germany, August Hoen first studied lithographic techniques there. He later immigrated to the United States and in the mid 1850's, founded his lithographic company in Baltimore. Around a decade later he relocated his firm to Richmond, Virginia, and became best known for his layered, five-color printing techniques. A. Hoen & Company was responsible for some of the most elaborate and beautiful images in this medium. |
Winner Plug Tobacco is an original lithograph printed in colors, (chromolithograph). It depicts a fantasy steeplechase where the horses are jumping through an enormous hoop in the shape of a stirrup. The letterpress for this 19th century work of art indicates that this is an advertisement for the British-American Tobacco Company, Inc., a company based in Petersburg, Virginia at the time. British-American Tobacco, was an amalgamation of Britain's Imperial Tobacco Company and the American Tobacco Company. This is a fine, original example of the color printing created by the American printer, A. Hoen & Company.
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Far less costly advancements of photomechanical methods, however made this original and complex form of printmaking all but obsolete by 1930.
Companies were quick to recognize the vast potential of this colour technique. Beginning around 1870, advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual images. And in the following decades, these companies were creating the most expensive and elaborate works, spending thousands of dollars on aditional techniques, such as raised printings, bronzing, empossing and multiple hues. As antique artoworks, advertising images (more than any other form) reflect the true tastes of the times.
During this era, tobacco companies represented on of the wealthiest and most competitive businesses. Hence it is not surprising that some of the greatest advertising art originated from these quarters. Winner Plug Tobacco is a fine, original example of 19th century American Advertising art.
