A. Hoen & Company: An original nineteenth century color lithograph (chromolithograph), Affection, represents a complex example of color printmaking. A German immigrant, August Hoen founded his lithographic company in Baltimore in the mid 1850's. Around a decade later he relocated his firm to Richmond, Virginia, and became best known for his layered, five-color printing techniques. A large lithograph, Affection is printed on fine wove, nineteenth century paper and with full margins as printed by A. Hoen & Company around 1890. Affection depicts a young woman and her pet parrot. With a crumb in her mouth she bends down to the bird, thus receiving a 'kiss' when he takes it. An elaborate, multi-colored frame surrounds the image. This A. Hoen & Company lithograph is a striking, original example of 19th century American advertising art. |

Note: | A. Hoen & Company was founded in Baltimore in the mid 1850's by August Hoen. He then relocated his lithographic company to Richmond, Virginia around the 1860's. An original lithograph, Affection is a striking example of the five-color printing technique and 19th century American advertising art created by this American printer. This work of art depicts a young woman in a room, finely dressed in 19th century clothing. Near her, there is a pet parrot on a perch, an elaborate, multi-colored frame surrounds the image. |
Chromolithography -- printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones -- became the most popular method for publishing everything from fine art and posters to post cards and advertisements during the latter half of the nineteenth century. The Far less costly advancements of photomechanical methods, however made this original and complex form of printmaking all but obsolete by 1930.
Companies were quick to recognize the vast potential of this colour technique. Beginning around 1870, advertisers regularly allied their products to appealing visual images. And in the following decades, these companies were creating the most expensive and elaborate works, spending thousands of dollars on aditional techniques, such as raised printings, bronzing, empossing and multiple hues. As antique artoworks, advertising images (more than any other form) reflect the true tastes of the times.
This fine, original lithograph -- known to exist in only a handful of s -- represents the early ‘incunabula’ of the art form. Many of the finest and certainly the rarest of examples hail from the 1870’s decade. This was the era of sweeping technical and artistic innovations, and images like this are crucial to understanding the future developments of art. It was, in fact, these early advertising lithographs, which led to the grand posters of the Art Nouveau era of the 1890’s. Never before (or since) had fine art and advertising been so closely linked. These early colour lithographs are extremely scarce and difficult to come by, especially in such a fine state of preservation.
It is not known what advertising company Affection was meant for since this does not contain the company's advertising letterpress. Whatever the case, Affection is a phenomenal work of art and the color printing is remarkable.
