Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - Victorian Era Holidays: This page contains a selection original engravings, etchings and lithographs. The main theme illustrated in all of these original works of art deals with 19th century Victorian celebrations, such as, Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, Valentines Day, and other similar festivities. 19th century daily and weekly news publishers like The Illustrated Sporting and Dramatic News, Montreal Daily Star, Illustrated London News, Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper, The Graphic, Every Saturday, The Aldine and other important periodicals of that period would hire artists to create engravings in order to enhance the sales of their illustrated publications. The original prints listed here all date from 1860 to 1895 and are all priced under 100.00 US dollars.
Our major holidays took their present form mainly in the mid nineteenth century. With Christmas, for example, the idea of giving gifts and creating a festive occasion, particularly for children, owes its roots to Germany. The Christmas tree, the yule log and, most importantly, St. Nicholas (Santa Claus), all originate from that country. By 1850 similar celebrations began to take place in England, the United States and elsewhere. By 1870 carol singing, Christmas dinners, Christmas bell-ringing, pantomimes and presents were firmly in place. At this time as well the American artist, Thomas Nast, was re-inventing the slim and sober figure of St. Nicholas into the jovial, rotund character of Santa Claus.
At the turn of the century Christmas, New Years, Valentine's Day and America's Thanksgiving were all established festivities. As a result representations of these holidays entered the area of fine art. Such fine artists as Louis Rhead, John Hall Thorpe, Margaret Kidder, Helen Stevens, Philip Brown Parsons, Theodore Brown Hapgood and Ernest Bradfield Freed created memorable, original art dealing with these celebrations.
A few of the original works of art offered for sale on this page include. 'A Christmas Day Stroll' published by the Montreal Daily Star, 'A Happy New Year, 1867' by William MaGrath, 'A Raid on the Dessert' by Edward Killingworth Johnson, 'A Special Favourite of St. Valentine' by H.
