Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - Puck (American Gilded Age Politics, Business and Culture): Puck holds an important place in the history of American satire. An Austrian, Joseph Ferdinand Keppler (1838-1894), moved to the United States in 1868 and within four years had become a leading artist for Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper. In 1876 he became the editor and a leading artist of his own creation, Puck, Puck Magazine was first established in St. Louis in 1871 by Joseph Keppler and his partner, Adolph Schwarzmann (1838-1904). The magazine did not fare well and folded within a year (1872). Keppler and Schwarzmann went to New York and in 1876, they began to publish their Puck Magazine again, this time, with great success. The periodical was initially meant to be America’s answer to England’s Punch, but under Keppler’s astute editorship it introduced both art and articles of a much more biting nature.
In 1876, the American periodical, Puck, New York issued a German edition of their magazine to appeal to America’s large German speaking population. It was printed on the presses of the lithographic firm of Mayer, Merkel and Ottmann located at 22 & 24 Church St., between Barclay & Versey Streets, New York. This periodical became such a huge success that it also began to publish issues in English. Around 1885, Puck's lithographic printer, Jacob Ottmann renamed his firm as J. Ottmann Lithographing Company. And, that same year Ottmann and the publishers of Puck magazine, Joseph Keppler & Adolph Schwarzmann commissioned the architect Albert Wagner to design and erect a new building for their firms. By 1886, it was completed and they moved into what is now known as the Puck building, located at Houston Street, in Manhattan. The famous golden Puck statue (mascot), that was placed on the front of the 'Puck Building' when it was constructed can still be seen on this historical bulding today. After Keppler’s death the editorship passed to his son and artist, Joseph Keppler, Junior (1872-1956), who continued to commission fine satirical art into the first decade of the twentieth century. In part, the journal’s success was due to its fine artists, such as, Joseph Keppler, Frederick Burr Opper (born, 1857 - died, 1937), Bernhard Gillam (born, 1859 - died, 1896), Frederick Graetz, A. B. Frost and others. In part also, Puck’s popularity stemmed from the fact that its artists had no qualms about attacking the major politicians and financial giants of the day. Such influential persons as Jay Gould, Richard Croker, John Kelly and Cyrus Field and President Garfield were constant satirical subjects.
When one views the satirical art of Puck one of the first conclusions to emerge is that the state of civilization hasn't changed that much from its day to ours. Puck’s artists most consistently attacked such issues as political corruption, tariff and taxation controversies, economic monopolies, superstition and bigotry, foreign expansion and exploitation, and manipulation of the press. It is thus no wonder that many of these fine, satirical lithographs still hit close to home.
Some of the original lithographs offered for sale on this page include, 'A Change of Doctors the only Thing that will Save Her (Spain)', 'Amendments and the Tariff Bill', 'A Natural Inference (Lord Slapbang & Richard Croker)', Japan makes her Debut under Columbia's Auspices, 'Monopoly Millionaires Dividing the Country', 'Muzzling the Press', 'The New Politics in fine Polemics - The Monopolists', 'John Kelly Galvanizing the Tammany Corpse', 'The Great Cincinnati Dramatic Festival', 'An Apparatus for Self-Murder', 'New York Horse Race - Democrats and Republicans', 'Poor Man!
