Original Engravings by J. Tookey & Julius Ibbetson for The Cabinet of Quadrupeds published by Peter Jackson, Fisher & Son | Art of The Print - The Cabinet of Quadrupeds | Original Engravings by J. Tookey & Julius Ibbetson for The Cabinet of Quadrupeds published by Peter Jackson, Fisher & Son |
Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - The Cabinet of Quadrupeds - A Collection of Original Engravings Published by Peter Jackson in 1805: These outstanding, turn-of-the-century engravings hail from the Cabinet of Quadrupeds, published in 1805 by Peter Jackson, Fisher & Son, St. Martin's-Le-Grand, London. Historical and Scientific descriptions were furnished by John Church, F. M. S. By far the greatest accomplishment of the publication, however, was the over one hundred engraved plates by James Tookey. The esteemed British artist, Julius Ibbetson, was commissioned to make the designs. A small number of the sets were hand-colored at the time of publication.
Several notes should be mentioned about the principal artist, Julius Ibbetson (Yorkshire, 1759 - 1812). An accomplished landscape, marine, figure and animal painter, Ibbetson gained public recognition at the early age of seventeen. He began exhibiting at the Royal Academy as early as 1785. He continued to exhibit there until his death, gaining a reputation for being one of the greatest painters of his day.
James Tookey (British, active 1800 - 1830): The English artist James Tookey was an accomplished engraver of animals, landscapes and portraits. Active in England during the first half of the 19th century, he engraved the plates for Church's, Cabinet of Quadrupeds, Bell's British Theatre. Speciments of his work will be found in the collecdtions of the British Museum and the National Portrait Gallery, N. Y.
The point that should thus be made is that these engravings from the Cabinet of Quadrupeds, strike us as being a great deal more than dry examinations of specimens of mammals. Without sacrificing any accuracy in his rendition, Ibbetson, throughout his fine backgrounds and sympathetic portrayals, has lifted these engravings into the realm of artistry. Such exceptional renditions of animals within their natural environments is exceedingly rare for this early era, and in part this explains why these engravings have been so often praised and sought after for almost two centuries.
Before the widespread use of lithography (around 1830), prints were either engraved or etched upon copper plates. Engravings and etchings, with their beautiful use of raised lines, have given us some of the finest images in the history of art. But in these early times publishers found them to be a distinct disadvantage. Firstly, the costs of printing from copper plates was very expensive. Secondly, an etching or engraving from this period could yield only about one to two hundred useful s. Thus all prints from the pre-1830's era are scarce. And, as all natural studies were then in their infancies, zoological engravings are scarce.
This page contains information and images that hail from The Cabinet of Quadrupeds published in 1805.
