Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - 19th century Americana: Cities, Landscapes & Seascapes: Before photography was available, nineteenth century daily and weekly periodicals would hire illustrators and engravers to create original wood engravings in order to illustrate and thus enhance the sales of their news publications. The changing landscape in America was often a subject of great interest for their public. These wonderful views represent historical and pictorial records of the transformation that took place throughout the American landscape during the latter 19th century. The original prints listed on this page date from 1870 to 1900 and are priced under 100.00 US dollars. A few of the scenes and views in this collection are A Family Coal-Mine, - A Pittsburgh Setch, A February Thaw - Broadway, New York, Behold Yon Towers, The Elfin's Water-Pocket & The Elfin's Water-Pocket by Thomas Moran, At Long Branch and A White Mountain Brook by William Ludwell Sheppard, A View of Memphis, Tennessee, Boston - 'Into the Jaws of Death by C. S. Reinhart, Coasting at Omaha by Arthur Boyd Houghton, Delaware Water Gap by J. D. Woodward, Elizabeth Valley, Essex County, New York by Alexander Lawrie, Evening, Pigeon Cove, Massachusetts by Kruseman van Elten, and White Birches of the Saranac by John Augustus Hows and many others.
During the second half of the nineteenth century, periodicals such as Every Saturday, The Aldine and Harper's, in the United States, and the Illustrated London News and The Graphic, in England, created pictorial journalism on a grand scale. Wood engraving (invented around 1780) at last made it possible for publishers to print images and words on the same page without the extravagant costs of producing etchings or engravings from metal plates. From about 1850 engraving upon wood became the dominant means of distributing information along with pictorial imagery, and continued in this role until around 1900, when the practical application of photography took control.
During the fifty year period when wood engraving reigned in the popular press, a unique combination of art and pictorial journalism took place. In America, for example, such outstanding artists as Thomas Moran, Winslow Homer, J. A. Hows, Kruseman van Elton and many others created designs for these publishers. The Aldine commissioned Thomas Moran for his landscapes and important views of the expanding American West. Both Harper’s and Every Saturday sought out designs from artists such as Winslow Homer, which both reported upon contemporary events and created works of significant art. As one can see from the original wood engravings provided below, their art produced a most valuable historic and cultural record of the latter nineteenth century.
