Art of the Print / www.artoftheprint.com - 19th Century Americana: Events, Activities, Sports, Professions, etc: Nineteenth century daily and weekly periodicals would hire artists to create original wood engravings in order to illustrate and thus enhance the sales of their publications. Sports, accidents, political issues, social events, and other activities taking place were often the subject of choice in order to please their public and also to keep them in touch with the daily or weekly events. The original prints listed here all date from 1870 to 1900 and are all priced under 100.00 US dollars. A few of the original engravings listed in this collection are, "A Bear Hunt" by John S. Davis, "A PowWow at the White House" published by Harper's Weekly, "An Encampment of Assiniboin Indians, Montana" by Eliphalet W. Terry, "At Sea, - Signaling a Passing Steamer" by Winslow Homer, "Bartering with Indians" by Arthur Boyd Houghton, "Boston - 'Into the Jaws of Death'" by C. S. Reinhart, "Catching Alligators in Florida" by W. P. Snyder, "Going to Market, San Antonio, Texas" published by The Graphic, "On the Levee at New Orleans" and many others.
Post Civil War America witnessed great change and expansion. Cities such as Pittsburgh, Chicago and St. Louis began to rival established eastern centers. All important railroads stretched into the West. Inherited problems, however, also continued to expand. Indian tribes 'Aboriginal Peoples' faced loss of land and culture. 'Free' African Americans experienced poverty and racism. Racial stereotypes are clearly evident in such engravings as "Negro Courtship", "A Possum Hunt in Old Virginia" by William Ludwell Sheppard, 'W. L. Sheppard', "Merry Christmas and Christmas Gift, Ole Massa" and others. Yet some, more notable, artists exposed the appalling nature of racism; such as Thomas Nast's, "He Wants a Change Too" and "Lynch Law in America".
An interesting aspect in some of these engravings is the manner in which international visitors viewed the United States. In 1870 the great British artist, Arthur Boyd Houghton (born, 1836 - died, 1875) was commissioned to draw the Americans and their way of life. His engravings -- "Coasting at Omaha", "Bartering with Indians", "Shaker Evans at Home", "Sketches in the Far West" -- are masterworks of artistic journalism. Other fine artists found within this section include Winslow Homer, John S. Davis, E. W. Terry, C. S. Reinhart, John Augustus Hows, Harry Fenn, William Cary, Arthur Burdett Frost, 'A. B. Frost', Felix Darley and J. O. Davidson.
During the second half of the nineteenth century, periodicals such as Every Saturday, The Aldine and Harper's, in the United States, and the Illustrated London News and The Graphic, in England, created pictorial journalism on a grand scale. Wood engraving (invented around 1780) at last made it possible for publishers to print images and words on the same page without the extravagant costs of producing etchings or engravings from metal plates. From about 1850 engraving upon wood became the dominant means of distributing information along with pictorial imagery, and continued in this role until around 1900, when the practical application of photography took control.
Note: "Americana: Events, Activities, Sports, Professions, etc..." is the second category to be included in the (Original Engravings, Lithographs and Etchings Priced at under 100.00 US dollars, dating from 1850 to 1900). "Americana: Cities, Landscapes and Seascapes", "American and International Satire published by (Puck) and Vanity Fair", "Art Exhibited at the World's Columbian Exposition", and "Victorian Era Holidays (Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Years, etc..)" have now been posted on our site. The following categories will be coming in the near future. "American Satire (Thomas Nast)", Sports, Professions etc..", "Army and Navy (Warfare)", "International Amusements","Entertainment and Royal Festivities", "International Cities, Castles, Churches, Etc.", "International Sports", "Exploration and Means of Transport", as well as many others.
