The Dresden Gallery: The Recueil d'estampes d'apres les plus celebres tableaux de la Galerie Royale de Dresde (The Dresden Gallery) represents a high point of mid to late eighteenth century engraving. Beginning around 1750 Dresden printers began inviting artists to engrave the masterworks at the Dresden Gallery. The size and scope of the endeavor is reflected in the international representation of the commissioned engravers. These included Jean Daulle (France, 1703-1763), Anna Folkema (Holland, 1695-1768), Karl Ludwig Wust (Germany, flourished, 1750-1760), Giuseppe Camerata (Italy, 1718-1803) and Claude Donat Jardinier (France, 1726-1774). Upon completion each of these large engravings was printed with titles in both Italian and French and bore the engraved seal of the Dresden Gallery along the lower margin. In 1753 the first fifty engravings were published as Volume One in a large elephant folio format. The second fifty engravings were completed in 1757 and issued as Volume Two. With their brilliant techniques of tone and texture most of these engravings were eagerly sought after in most major European centres. Almost four decades after the completion of these sets a further fifty engravings were produced by the Dresden Gallery. Engraved mostly by German artists such as Christian Gottfried Schulze (1749-1819) and Heinrich Friedrich Laurin (1756-1830), these later works mainly dealt with the master works of landscape painting in the gallery. When this set was published (c. 1795), the earlier two sets were also reprinted. This original engraving hails from this edition. |

The Dusseldorf Gallery: During the latter half of the nineteenth century Dusseldorf became one of the most important centres of etching in Germany. Distinguished etchers, such as Carl Jutz, Kroener, Von Eckenbrecher and Volkhart, produced most of their work while working there. Such was the appeal of the Dusseldorf etchers that in 1887 Estes and Lauriat published a portfolio of twenty original etchings not only in Germany, but also in Boston.
The Montreal Daily Star: The Montreal Daily Star (founded in 1867) became a major publisher of original Canadian prints particularly in regard to the Montreal Winter Carnival. Beginning in 1883, it was Canada's first large winter celebration and predated Quebec City's Carnival by eleven years. Highly competitive sporting events took place throughout the city. The Winter Carnival became a hugely successful event. The Montreal Star and competing publishers thus hired Canada's greatest artists to commemorate the activities. One need only mention that three of the major artists covering the Carnival at the time were Henri Julien, William Raphael and Robert Harris. Their original lithographs in this field stand as an important historical and artistic document of nineteenth century Canada.
The Montreal Daily Witness: The Montreal Daily Witness and the Montreal Daily Star became major Canadian Publishers of original lithographs and wood engravings with the popular rise of the Montreal Winter Carnival. Beginning in 1883, The Carnival was Canada's initial Winter event and predated Quebec City's Carnival by eleven years. The Montreal Daily Witness was particularly well represented with the skills of such artists as William Raphael, Harington Bird and Robert Harris. | Sold
The Portfolio: The British publishing company, The Portfolio was England's leading art journal of the latter nineteenth century. Founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), it was published in annual issues from 1870 to 1892. Hamerton was the influential author of such classic books as Etching and Etchers and for The Portfolio he regularly commissioned such great British etchers as Seymour Haden, D. Y. Cameron, Ernest George and Robert Walker MacBeth to contribute original art. Today these etchings are collected as valuable examples of fine nineteenth century British art.
The Print Club of Cleveland: Founded in 1919, the Print Club of Cleveland was one of the first American organizations to promote original printmaking. During its long life it annually commissioned at least one original lithograph, woodcut or etching from many great masters. Besides David Jansheski, such as Henri Matisse, Norman Acroyd, Juvenal Sanso, Karl Schrag, Peter Takal, Mark Tobey and Salvador Dali contributed original prints to the club.
The Print Connoisseur: The Print Connoisseur published illustrated articles on contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January 1920 to December 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned for each issue and the more expensive; limited editions of 100 each contained a signed in pencil by the artist. During its decade of publishing, such major artists as George Elbert Burr, Frank Benson, Lynd Ward, Winkler, Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth century America.
The Studio: During the late nineteenth and early twentieth century special art journals around the world published original etchings, lithographs and woodcuts on a regular basis. Some of the greatest original prints from this classic era were commissioned and published by The Studio, in London, Pan, in Germany, The Print Connoisseur, in America, and Vervielfaltigende Kunst, in Vienna. Whistler, Pennell and many others contributed.
Thomas Macklin: Thomas Macklin created 'The Poet's Gallery' (1788-1799), which became England's second largest publishing house next to John Boydell's 'Shakespeare Gallery'. During the 1780's and 1790's Boydell - then Lord Mayor of London - had embarked upon the most exhaustive publishing venture in the history of British art; the over one hundred large engravings dealing with Shakespearean themes. These were epic works of art concentrating mainly upon the great history and tragedy plays such as Macbeth, Hamlet and King Lear. Macklin responded to Boydell's series by issuing his own Shakespeare etchings from 1792 to 1796. These works of art, however, were significantly different from Boydell's grandiose engravings. The entire series was to consist of forty-eight original engravings and etchings designed by Henry Bunbury, who chose mostly to depict the lighter or more magical elements in the plays of Shakespeare. Thus images from plays such as Winter's Tale, The Merry Wives of Windsor and even The Tempest figure prominently.
The Broomielaw, Glasgow - Looking East by Thomas Nelson and Sons |
Thomas Nelson: The Scottish publisher, Thomas Nelson was famous for his chromolithographic views. Among these the most notable were his two great series, English Scenery (1891) and Souvenir of Scotland (1895). The complete series of Souvenir of Scotland contained 120 miniature views detailing the cities of Glasgow, Edinburgh, the scenery along the Clyde, the Trosachs, Loch Lomond, the West Highlands and of Southern Scotland. As one can easily understand, these miniature views have long been considered to be among the finest of the nineteenth century. The amazing detailing combined with the myriad of shades and colours places each of Nelson's views in the front rank of fine art colour lithography. Chromolithography: The exacting art of colour printing from lithographic stones originated in Europe during the middle 1830's. These colour prints revolutionized artistic culture, with images ranging from the fine arts of topographical and botanical images to fashion plates and advertisements. Publishers throughout Britain and the United states created fine chromolithographic city views and landscapes during the second half of the nineteenth century. |

True & Company: True & Company was a leading American publishing company in Augsta, Main. One of the hundreds of books published by this publisher was Daughters of America, by Pheobe Hanaford, in 1883. Some of the maine monthly newspapers and magazines published in 1886 for family reading were the Golden Moments, the Illustrated Family Herald and True's Illustrated Magazine and Home Companion. The American Chromolithograph: The revolutionary art of colour printmaking from lithographic stones began in Europe during the mid 1830's. The Germans, in particular, excelled in the new art form and many accomplished printers and publishers of that nationality moved to the United States at this time. The first American chromolithograph was created in 1840. During the following fifty years many of these original colour prints were made to adorn the walls of American parlours. Large and profitable businesses sprang up in almost every major city and by 1880 it had become the dominant form of artistic printmaking. The cheaper and more practical advances of photomechanical methods, however, sounded the death knell for the chromolithograph by the turn of the century. Yet, not even our most sophisticated means of reproducing images can equal the vibrant, oil-based colours of the chromolithograph. |
