In 1967 Jann Haworth co-designed (along with her then husband,

album cover for the Beatles's, Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart's Club Band. Later
that year she received a Grammy for her artwork. Jann Haworth first studied
art at UCLA and then completed her studies at the Slade School of Art, London.
From approximately 1960 to 1985, Haworth lived and worked in England. Along
with Peter Blake, Richard Hamilton, David Hockney and others, she was a major
figure in the first decade of British Pop Art, a movement which based its designs
upon the images of consumerism and popular culture. |

Hara (Stations of Tokaido) |
View larger image, more information and other original woodcuts by Hiroshige
Hiroshige (1797-1858): Undoubtedly, the two greatest masters of Japanese landscape art
are Hiroshige and Hokusai. Hiroshige --perhaps the most lyrical landscape artist
of any time -- was born into a low ranking samurai family in the capital city
of Edo. He became a pupil of Toyohiro at the age of fifteen and also studied
the art of the Utagawa School. He started his career as a book illustrator and
then turned to portrayals of beautiful women. It wasn't until seeing Hokusai's Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji that Hiroshige turned almost exclusively
to his famous landscape art.
Hiroshige's first series of views of the fifty-three Stations
of the Tokaido was published in 1834. During the following years this great
artist produced many amazing woodcuts of views in and around Edo, Osaka, Ohmi
and Kyoto. Yet, almost until his death, he kept returning to the spiritual landscape
scenes of the Tokaido Road. |

William Hogarth (London, 1697 - 1764):
The name of William Hogarth requires little in the way of an introduction.
He is the unquestioned father of England's rich tradition of satire and remains
one of the most original and lively minds in the entire history of British art.
Famous for his paintings, Hogarth's engravings are even more paramount: the
imagery from The Harlot's Progress, Marriage a la Mode, The Four Stages
of Cruelty, The Four Times of the Day and a host of others are crucial
to an understanding of eighteenth century art and culture. Yet Hogarth's art
stretched beyond his time and his masterful engravings are as relevant to our
society as they were to his. |

exception of a one year absence, Hollar spent the remainder of his life in England,
leaving a masterful artistic record of the times and of his talents. Hollar's
art covers portrait, illustrative, costume, topographical and architectural
subjects. Today he is regarded as a master etcher in all these fields. |

Winslow Homer (Boston, 1836 - Scarboro, Maine, 1910): There is no doubt that
as both a painter and as a graphic designer, Winslow Homer's position
as one of America's greatest artists is secure. Essentially self-taught,
Homer was apprenticed to the Boston lithographic firm of John H. Bufford
at the age of nineteen. There, he produced mostly lithographic covers
for sheet music. His first designed wood engraving appeared in a Boston
periodical in 1857. Later that year, Winslow Homer contributed his first of many designs to Harper's Weekly of New York. A year later he moved
to that city to continue his work in this field. It was with his wood
engravings that the world was first introduced to Homer's unique talents.
Until 1874, Winslow Homer supported himself largely with his designed wood engravings
and they were crucial to the development of his future paintings and prints. |
