Carl Albert Joseph Gaber (Stuttgart, 1866 - c. 1930): This artist came from an artistic family. His father (August Gaber) was a well known woodcut artist while his grand-father (Ludwig Richter) was a famous 19th century painter. Joseph Gaber received instructions from both of these masters as well as from Herzog Gunter, in Schleswig-Holstein. Along with producing many fine etchings, Gaber extensively traveled and worked in many parts of the world, including remote locations in both South America and Africa. During the First World War he accepted the post of Professor of Art at his native Stuttgart Academy.

In both Germany and America, Gaber became best known for his fine colour etchings of animal studies, most notably those of dogs. Pekinese were a particular favoured subject of the artist and during the early 1920's he created at least ten colour etchings on this delightful subject.

Emil Ganso (Halberstadt, Germany, 1895 - New York, 1941): An accomplished painter, wood engraver, lithographer and etcher, Emil Ganso was a master of both landscapes and nudes. Born in Germany, Ganso was forced to earn his living from early childhood. He thus became a baker and continued that trade when he arrived in the United States in 1912. Struggling to survive, Ganso was mainly self-taught in art with the exception of a three week night course at the National Academy. A large turning point in his career came during the First World War when he met and was befriended by the famous Bulgarian/French artist, Jules Pascin (1885-1930). Escaping persecution from the War, Pascin lived in New York until 1920. During his spare hours, Ganso often worked in Pascin's studio, painting and drawing his models.

During the following years Ganso created many brilliant works of art in all graphic media. In 1933 he won the prestigious Guggenheim Fellowship which allowed him to travel and work in Europe for a period of one year. Upon his return he joined the well known Woodstock community of artists in New York State. Today, Ganso's original prints and drawings are included in most major American collections, such as, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Woodstock Artists Association, the Butler Institute of American Art, the Los Angeles County Museum and the Boston Museum of Fine Arts.

Edmund Henry Garrett's first original prints were in the medium of wood engraving. Under the advice of Robert Swain Gifford (1840-1905), he created his first etching in 1879. Specializing in both architectural views and landscapes, Garrett's ensuing etchings dealt mainly with areas around Boston.

Arthur Joseph Gaskin (Birmingham, England, 1862 - 1928): A major illustrator, portraitist, painter and designer during the last decade of the nineteenth century, Arthur Joseph Gaskin was a leading force of what was called 'the Birmingham School'. This was an influential group of artists who both allied their style of illustration to and worked with William Morris at the famous Kelmscott Press. Other prominent artists in this movement included Louis Fairfax Muckley, E. H. New and C. M. Gere.

Gaskin studied art at the Birmingham School of Art and later taught there. During the early 1880's, his classmates and companions were such fellow artists as Frank Richards and Louis Fairfax Muckley. After his contact with William Morris, Gaskin applied himself to the study of decorative illustration and the crafts. In this latter light he also became an accomplished jewelry designer and later was appointed the Director of the Jewellers and Silversmiths School, Birmingham.

During his career, Arthur Gaskin was a frequent exhibitor at many major institutions, such as the Royal Academy and the Royal Society of British Artists. Among other major collections examples of his drawings are included at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, and the Birmingham Art Gallery.

Lucien-Marcelin Gautier (Aix-en-Provence, 1850 - Paris, c. 1915): A fine French etcher and designer, Lucien Gautier first studied art in Aix-en-Provence under Marius Reynaud. He then completed his education in Paris, under Gaucherel. He began his career there etching and engraving plates after the designs of Corot and Charles Jacque. By 1875, however, Gautier had emerged as an original etcher of note. His fine art received medals and awards in France in 1884, 1894 and 1900.

During his successful career Lucien-Marcelin Gautier both designed and etched views of Rome, Venice, London and elsewhere. Yet his name will always be most strongly associated with his wonderful views of Paris and other major French cities. In particular, during the 1880's, he was commissioned by the prestigious French publisher, L'Art, to create large etchings of Paris and Marseille.

'Paul Gavarni' Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier (Paris, 1804 - Auteuil, 1866) : This artist is much better known to the world as 'Gavarni' or 'Paul Gavarni -- is second only to Daumier as the greatest social commentator and satirical artist of nineteenth century France. Beginning his career as an engineer's assistant he began to exhibit signs of his future genius in the late 1820's as a fashion designer and illustrator. His talent for caricature and satirical art, however, led him to the editorship of Les Gens du Monde in 1835. He afterwards took charge of the influential periodical, Charivari, and was then forced to live and work in England in the late 1840's in order to avoid political persecution. One of the most clever caricaturists of any time, Gavarni's draughtsmanship was without equal. With the greatest economy of line he captured the follies and foibles of his age.

During the 1850's, Gavarni was commissioned by the Paris Journal to create satirical lithographs on a daily basis. This gave birth to his greatest series, such as, D'Apres Nature, Masques et Visages and Physionomies Parisiennes. Vous etes une Veuve! hails from D'Apres Nature which many scholars hold in high esteem. Here we are treated to an entire spectrum of both telling and comic scenes and situations when Paul Gavarni's ability was at its peak.

Esther Gentle Rattner (New York, 1905 - 1998): A fine New York City sculptor, painter and printmaker, Esther Gentle studied art at the Art Students League of New York. Her first exhibited works of art were representational in nature, but by the end of the Second World War she emerged as one of New York's leading abstractionists. In this regard, she was partly influenced by the famous abstract painter, Abraham Rattner (1895-1978), whom she married at this time. Even in these early years, however, her much more sculptural style departed noticeably from the imagery of her husband.

During the 1950's, Esther Gentle Rattner was important not only as an artist of the New York scene but as a gallery director. The Esther Gentle Gallery opened in Manhattan in 1951. Among its more important shows was a 1954 one man exhibition of the watercolours and paintings of her friend, the author, Henry Miller.

Today the largest collection of Gentle's sculptures, lithographs and silk-screens is found at the St. Petersburg Museum of Fine Arts, St. Petersburg, Florida. People is an outstanding original example of her lithographic art.

Goeneutte studied art at Paris's Ecole des Beaux-Arts, under both Isidore Pils and Henri Lehmann. He soon, however, grew dissatisfied with formal training and moved to the Paris suburb of Montmarte. There he became friends with Renoir, for whom he both modeled and painted. At this time he also met another artist, Marcellin Desboutin, who sparked his lifelong interest in the art of engraving and etching.

Goeneutte first exhibited his art at the Paris Salon in 1876 and was an annual exhibitor there until his untimely death in 1894. He was also closely associated with such artists as Manet, Degas and Renoir, but despite their insistence, chose not to exhibit with the ists.

Etching and engraving was as important to Goeneutte as painting. In total his graphic oeuvre consists of almost one hundred and fifty original etchings, drypoints and lithographs. Most deal with landscapes and town views, especially scenes from the lives of the working classes. And, although he traveled to London (1880), Rotterdam (1887) and Venice (1890), the large majority of his art depicts views of Paris and other French centres. Goeneutte also created etchings for a portfolio entitled, Paris a l'eau forte (1889) and for Emile Zola's novel, La Terre. Today his important art is included in many major collections such as the Musee d'Orsay, the San Francisco Museum of Fine Arts, the Tate Gallery and the National Gallery, London.
