View larger image, more information and other original works of art by D. Y. Cameron. Sir David Young Cameron (Glasgow, 1865 - 1945): Rightly regarded as one of the greatest masters of the British school of landscape and architectural etching, David Young Cameron started his career in business while studying part-time at the Glasgow School of Art. He abandoned his career in commerce at the age of twenty and produced his first etching two years later. By the time he created his last etching (1932), Cameron had left an oeuvre of exactly 500 works of art, many of which are now considered as masterworks of original graphic art. David Young Cameron was a full member of the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and the Royal Engravers. He was also knighted for his contribution to British art. Most of Cameron's early works of art, committed purely in etching, depict Scottish scenes. From 1892 to 1909, however, he frequently visited the Continent and created many views in Holland, France, Italy and Egypt. After 1911 Cameron again almost entirely devoted his art to the Scottish landscape. Yet, unlike his earlier views, the medium he chose was drypoint, with its rich, tonal contrasts and deep, velvety lines. |

Reflet (Reflection) |
View larger image and more information for Noe Canjura's original lithograph Reflet. Noe Canjura (Apopa, San Salvador, 1924 - Paris, France, 1970): The beginning of modernism in Salvadoran art is largely attributed to three major artists, Raul Elas Reyes, Mario Araujo Rajo and Noe Canjura. All three studied painting and printmaking in San Salvador at the Academia de Valero Lecha. The youngest, Noe Canjura, was the first to achieve an international reputation. Shortly after his graduation, Canjura received a scholarship from the government to continue his studies in Paris. Except for occasional visits to San Salvador, France would be the artist's home for the remainder of his short life. Almost immediately, Canjura's unique use of colour, tone and texture brought extensive recognition and his paintings and lithographs were included in many important French exhibitions. During the last decade of his life, Canjura's art was exhibited in Rome, Venice, Antwerp, Paris and Marseilles. Today his art is included in many public collections in France, Italy, the United States and Latin America. |

View more larger image, information and other original works of art by Antonio Carbonati Antonio Carbonati (Mantua, 1893 - Rome, 1858): Now firmly placed in the front rank of early twentieth century Italian art, Antonio Carbonati's first published etchings date from 1916. During the following three years he created a number of etchings (most dealing with Rome) which brought him an enthusiastic reception from the public. Unlike so much art in Italy at this time, these were not traditional or tourist vies, but thoroughly modern images, indicative of Carbonati's very unique style and contemporary concerns. Between 1920 and 1925, Carbonati lived and worked in Paris. French recognition of Carbonati's talent was swift and he became a juried member of the Salon d'Automne (1923) and won the prestigious gold medal at the Exposition Internatinoale des Arts Decoratifs, Paris (1925). |

View larger image, more information and other original works of art by Frederico Castellon Frederico Castellon (Almeria, Spain, 1914 - New York, 1971): Somewhere between dreams and nightmares exists the famous imagery of Frederico Castellon. Containing elements of the surreal, satire and his own powerful fantasy world, Castellon's paintings, etchings and lithographs have long inhabited our imaginations. Born in Spain, Castellon moved with his family to New York at the age of seven. Almost completely self-taught, Castellon often returned to work in his first country and even received a fellowship from the Ministry of State of the Spanish Republic (1933). He became a citizen of the United States in 1943. Castellon's art first received major international exposure at the famous Exhibition of Spanish Artists, Paris, 1935. The other participants included Picasso, Gris and Miro. At this time, Castellon's art was confined mostly to painting and drawing. His first lithographs and etchings appeared after 1937, and for the balance of his life he dedicated himself mainly to the graphic arts. As an original printmaker and a prominent instructor, Castellon's influence upon American art was substantial. He taught at Columbia University (1948-1961), the Pratt Institute (1951-1961), Queen's College and at the prestigious National Academy of Design. During these years Castellon also received awards and grants from such institutions as the Guggenheim Institute, the National Institute of Arts and Letters, the Library of Congress and the National Academy. Today his remarkable etchings and lithographs are included in most major public collections, such as the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, the Metropolitan Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Chicago Art Institute. |

View larger image, more information and other original works of art by Samuel Chamberlain Samuel Chamberlain (Cresco, Iowa, 1895 - Marblehead, Maine, 1975): One of America's finest twentieth century architectural artists, Samuel Chamberlain studied architecture at the University of Washington (1913) and at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (1914). When the United States entered the First World War Chamberlain left M.I.T. to join the American Field Service Ambulance Corps in France. He was so impressed with the architecture of the old world that he stayed in Europe to sketch after the end of the war in 1918. In this regard, Chamberlain joined other famous Americans who dedicated much of their art to European architectural scenes, such as Whistler, Pennell and John Taylor Arms. Although he returned to the United States frequently to both teach and create art there, much of Chamberlain's time during the following two decades was spent in the countries where he drew his strongest inspiration; France, Spain and Italy. His first lithograph was created in 1923 and in the following year he produced his first of many fine drypoint engravings. As well, Chamberlain was both the author and illustrator of a number of architectural books, such as, Sketches of Northern Spanish Architecture (1924), Domestic Architecture in Rural France (1926) and Tudor Homes of England (1928). He is even credited with introducing gourmet French dining to the United States with his widely read cookbook, Clementine in the Kitchen. |

Galgano Cipriani (Florence, 1758 - 1833): Galgano Cipriani studied art and engraving techniques under Raphael Morghen at the Academy of Florence. During his career he engraved many fine designs after Renaissance and Baroque masters, including Guido Reni and Titian. Cipriani was a Professor at both the Academies of Naples and Venice. Like Morghen, Cipriani based his engraved style upon creating a network of intricate intersected lines and cross hatchings to build strong areas of light and shade. This is clearly in evidence in Allegory of Victory, where striking textural and tonal values are brilliantly portrayed. |

The Orange Cart |
View larger image and more information for Armand Coussens's original etching, The Orange Cart. Armand Coussens (St. Ambroix, France, 1881 - Nimes, 1935): "Landscape, rural types, the life in small provincial cities find in Coussens an enthusiastic interpreter. An old woman with goats, a street vendor of oranges, a hawker resting under a tree, an of a harbour or of an open-air market yield exquisite plates of delicate colouring. Coussens' oeuvre numbers now over one hundred plates. Sixteen have been bought by the Chalcographie du Louvre, a sign of high appreciation rarely experienced by a young artist." * (F. L. Leipnik, A History of French Etching from the Sixteenth Century to the Present Day, London, John Lane, 1924, pp. 189 & 190). A great colour etcher of the early twentieth century, Armand Coussens studied at the Ecole des Beaux-arts in Nimes. Upon graduation he lived and worked in Paris for the following ten years. There both his paintings and etchings were frequently exhibited at major salons such as the Societe des Artistes Francais and at l'hotel Drouot. Coussens then moved back to his studio in Nimes where he continued to create his beautiful colour etchings of landscapes and figure studies. Today examples of his art are included in prominent public collections in New York, London, Tokyo and Paris. |
